Bobby Witt Jr. was out of the Kansas City Royals’ starting lineup Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants, and the club is treating his back issue carefully after it flared up again.
Witt will miss his second game in three days. He sat out Sunday’s finale against the San Diego Padres because of back tightness, then left Monday’s game in the fifth inning when the problem returned.
“He’s still pretty stiff,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “I mean his back spasm (locked up) pretty good yesterday, which is why he came out. And he is still feeling that today.”
The Royals expect Witt to be day-to-day. Tyler Tolbert got the start at shortstop Tuesday as Kansas City tried to navigate another injury hit to a roster that has been banged up all season.
“We have to see,” Quatraro said. “Obviously, we need to get the spasm to relax first, and then, figure out if it’s something that he can play through and how long that would be until he can.”
Witt has had back tightness pop up at different points this season, and the Royals have already seen him play through it. This time, though, they’re taking the cautious route.
He’s also already missed six games this year with a Grade 1 MCL sprain in June. Now he joins a list of injured Royals that includes All-Star pitchers Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and Carlos Estévez, among others.
Even with the interruptions, Witt’s season has still been strong. He is hitting .279 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs, has stolen 30 bases and owns an .800 OPS. Last week, he played in his third All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Kansas City’s lineup for Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium was: Carter Jensen at catcher, Lane Thomas in center field, Jac Caglianone in right field, Salvador Perez at designated hitter, Vinnie Pasquantino at first base, Starling Marte in left field, Michael Massey at second base, Nick Loftin at third base and Tyler Tolbert at shortstop.
