Michael Wacha didn’t need a pile of strikeouts or a highlight-reel finish to keep the Royals rolling. He just kept the Tigers uncomfortable all night, and Kansas City backed him with enough offense to take a 3-1 win and stretch its winning streak to seven.
The game moved fast - both clubs combined for only 10 runners on the night - and Wacha was at the center of that rhythm. He wasn’t working a no-hitter, and he wasn’t overpowering everyone in sight, but he was in control.
When he came off the mound after the top of the seventh, he had struck out 6, allowed just 4 baserunners and given up only 1 run. Hao-Yu Lee’s solo shot in the top of the fifth was the lone blemish, and it was one of only three times all game that Wacha let a runner get as far as second.
Kansas City’s bullpen then finished the job, though not without adding another odd wrinkle to what has been a messy season in relief. Alex Lange handled the eighth cleanly, and Craig Kimbrel closed it out to earn his first save since 2024 with the Baltimore Orioles.
Kimbrel became the eighth different Royals pitcher to record at least one save this year, a list that also includes Daniel Lynch IV, Eli Morgan and Lucas Erceg. Lynch is set to start tomorrow, Morgan is no longer with the team, and Erceg was demoted to Omaha earlier this week.
The Royals didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard, either, but they did enough. Kyle Isbel opened the third inning with a no-doubt home run, giving him back-to-back games with a homer for the third time in his career. Salvador Perez later added his own damage, first fouling one hard down the left-field line before eventually going deep to dead center.
Kansas City’s final run came in the sixth. Jac Caglianone ripped a double at 102.2 MPH just past Spencer Torkelson, moved to third on Perez’s groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
That was the whole story, really: a fast game, a steady start from Wacha, and just enough offense to finish off a 3-1 win. The Royals evened the season series and took the weekend set from a team that had given them trouble earlier in the year.
They can go for the sweep tomorrow, and the winner will also claim the season series. Daniel Lynch IV, who carries a 2.83 ERA and 4.02 SIERA, is expected to start for Kansas City and likely hand things off to Mason Black. The Tigers are expected to counter with Framber Valdez, listed at 4.35 ERA and 4.36 SIERA, though MLB currently has them as TBD.
