Royals General Manager J.J. Picollo, usually a composed figure, found himself fighting back tears during a news conference at Kauffman Stadium.
The reason? A heartfelt tribute to the late Terrance Gore, a beloved outfielder from the 2015 World Series championship team, who passed away last month due to complications following emergency surgery.
“It’s such a tragic thing to lose a guy at 34 years old,” Picollo shared, his voice catching with emotion. After a brief pause to collect himself, he continued, “But you know, it’s the least we could do for his family. It’ll be special to see his kids out there.”
Terrance Gore was more than just a player; he was a devoted father. His son, Zane, an aspiring baseball player himself, was recently seen running around the field, embodying his father’s spirit.
“Our players are special guys,” Picollo added. “They made that day memorable, and hopefully, today will be just as meaningful for our fans as we celebrate Terrance’s life.”
The Royals planned a touching tribute before the game against the Twins. A message honoring Gore was set to be read aloud, his photo displayed prominently on the Crown Vision board. In a fitting gesture, Zane Gore was chosen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, with his family receiving flowers in a moment of shared remembrance.
Known for his incredible speed and base-stealing prowess, Gore’s legacy extends beyond Kansas City. The Braves also honored him before the Royals’ 4-1 victory over Atlanta, recognizing his contributions to their 2021 championship win. Gore's career was marked by success, having also clinched a title with the Dodgers in 2020.
