Royals Prospects Shine in Spring Breakout Victory
In a spirited display at Surprise Stadium, the Royals' prospects celebrated a 9-2 triumph over the Rangers' up-and-comers in a way that only teammates can-by signing each other's caps. This camaraderie highlighted the team's vibrant atmosphere, with players like Michael Lombardi, Josh Hansell, and Ben Kudrna joining the fun.
Third baseman Josh Hammond, ranked as the Royals' No. 6 prospect, captured the mood perfectly: “The vibes were up,” he noted. Playing in a big stadium against strong competition was an honor for him and his teammates.
Here’s a closer look at what made this Spring Breakout win special:
1. Gavin Cross: Dual Threat
Gavin Cross, the Royals' No. 27 prospect, showcased his growing prowess both at the plate and in the field. His two-run homer in the third inning was a standout moment, rocketing off the bat at 110.1 mph and traveling a projected 404 feet.
Cross's defensive skills were also on display as he made a remarkable play at first base, snagging a 109 mph liner. Although primarily an outfielder, Cross is re-learning first base to add versatility to his game. Borrowing Vinnie Pasquantino’s glove, he reflected, “His glove was money today.”
Cross’s adaptability and performance suggest a promising year ahead as he edges closer to the majors.
2. Pitching Powerhouses
Left-hander Justin Lamkin, the Royals' No. 15 prospect, demonstrated why he was a top draft pick. In his start, Lamkin delivered three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. His deceptive delivery made his fastball seem even faster, while his slider and curveball left hitters baffled.
Following Lamkin, the Royals showcased their No. 3 prospect, Kendry Chourio. The 18-year-old impressed with his high-velocity fastball, averaging 97.1 mph and peaking at 98.5 mph. “I’m very fresh right now,” Chourio shared, crediting his offseason training for his enhanced performance.
3. Big Leaguers Drop By
Adding to the excitement, top Royals prospects Carter Jensen and Noah Cameron made an appearance in the dugout. Jensen, the Royals’ No. 1 prospect and MLB’s No. 18, took the opportunity to connect with younger players like Hammond and Sean Gamble.
“They’re awesome,” Hammond said of Jensen and Cameron. Their presence provided encouragement and a sense of unity among the players.
This Spring Breakout game wasn’t just about the win; it was a showcase of the Royals' promising future, with prospects displaying skill, versatility, and a strong team spirit. As these young talents continue to develop, the Royals’ pipeline looks brighter than ever.
