The Royals had chances, grabbed the lead twice and still walked away with nothing to show for it as the Dodgers leaned on the long ball and completed the sweep with a 4-2 win.
Kansas City actually opened with some life. Daniel Lynch struck out the side in the first and looked sharp enough to make his return to the rotation feel worthwhile. Then the Royals pieced together a two-out rally in the second: Tyler Tolbert worked a walk, stole second on the first pitch of Josh Rojas’ at-bat, and Rojas followed with a single to right to put Kansas City ahead 1-0.
That edge disappeared almost immediately. Mookie Betts, who has struggled overall this year but has been locked in against the Royals in this series, jumped on a pitch in the middle of the zone in the bottom of the second and drove it to left-center for a solo homer. That tied it at 1-1.
Kansas City answered right back in the third. Jac Caglianone reached when Betts’ throw on a grounder up the middle sailed wide and into the dugout, putting him on second.
Salvador Perez then sent the first pitch he saw slowly to the right side, just enough to sneak through the defense and score Caglianone. The Royals were back in front, 2-1.
But the Dodgers kept landing the bigger blows. In the bottom of the third, Miguel Rojas doubled down the third-base line, and Shohei Ohtani followed by turning on an up-and-in sinker and sending it the other way for a two-run homer.
That put Los Angeles ahead 3-2 and ended Lynch’s night. Jose Cuas came in and finished the inning with help from a caught stealing by Perez, then handled the fourth as well.
The next punch came in the fifth. Mason Black entered for Kansas City and immediately watched Hunter Feduccia launch the Dodgers’ third homer of the night, stretching the lead to 4-2.
Eric Lauer, after a shaky start of his own, settled down for Kansas City and worked through the middle innings more comfortably. Even after climbing near 90 pitches, he returned for the sixth and got through Starling Marte and Carter Jensen with little trouble.
Isaac Collins later drew a walk after the Dodgers lost their second challenge of the night, leaving them without ABS help the rest of the way. Kansas City challenged a potential hit-by-pitch on Tolbert soon after and lost that one too.
Tolbert struck out, and Lauer’s night looked finished at 107 pitches after six innings with the Royals still within striking distance. Instead, he came back for the seventh, retired Rojas for one more out, and then gave way to Landon Knack.
Salvador Perez did not finish the game behind the plate. Luke Maile replaced him in the sixth, and Perez’s right elbow is now being described as barking, with more information expected over the next few days.
The eighth inning turned into a parade of odd popups. Carter Jensen lifted one nearly straight up and back toward the mound, where it dropped untouched because the pitcher, still Knack, thought someone else would call him off.
Isaac Collins then sent another sky-high ball toward the Royals dugout, and Freddie Freeman chased it down before tumbling down the steps. He stayed in the game.
Craig Kimbrel made his Royals debut in the eighth, and a double play kept it quiet. But Kansas City never cracked Knack again, and the Dodgers closed out the sweep. The Royals now head to Anaheim hoping for a better finish to the road trip.
