The Royals have cut ties with veteran outfielder Starling Marte, according to MLB.com’s transactions tracker. Marte was designated for assignment on Monday, and Kansas City has now gone a step further by releasing him rather than sending him outright to the minors.
Because of his service time, the 37-year-old had the ability to reject an outright assignment. Instead, the Royals chose to move on, making Marte free to sign with any club.
Kansas City still owes Marte the rest of his $1MM contract. If another team brings him in, it would only be on the prorated league minimum for however long he spends on the roster, with that amount coming out of the Royals’ bill. Marte also collected another $1MM in bonuses tied to plate appearance and active roster thresholds, but those incentives won’t follow him to a new team if he lands one in free agency.
The production just wasn’t there this season. Marte hit .242/.298/.314 over 59 games as a part-time player for Kansas City, with two home runs and two stolen bases. His sprint speed landed in the 11th percentile, the worst mark of his career in the Statcast era, and he finished with -2 Defensive Runs Saved in 34 games in the outfield.
The Royals mostly used Marte against left-handed pitching, giving the right-handed bat 113 at-bats versus southpaws and 40 against same-handed pitching. He did fare better against lefties, but only marginally, posting a .630 OPS in those matchups and a .563 OPS against righties.
It’s a sharp turn for a player who was still productive not long ago. Marte put up a 112 wRC+ with the Mets just a year ago, and he could still attract attention as a low-cost platoon option. That was the role Kansas City had in mind, but it never really clicked.

Jac Caglianone's Early Exit Just Put Royals Fans On Edge
Jac Caglianone gave Royals fans a brief scare on Aug. 20 when he exited the game with right ankle soreness, ending a productive night earlier than expected. Before leaving, the young outfielder had stretched his on-base streak to 17 games, then was replaced by a pinch hitter in the fifth inning as Kansas City adjusted on the fly.
The Royals update offered only the soreness designation, leaving the broader picture murky for now. What matters most for Kansas City is that Caglianone had been in the middle of one of the steadier runs in the lineup, so any injury check becomes a real concern, especially with no immediate clarity on the cause or how serious it might be. Maikel Garcias Latest Injury Puts Royals Right Back In A Bind
Maikel Garcia had only just worked his way back into the Royals lineup after missing 46 games with a left-hand muscle strain, giving Kansas City a needed everyday presence on the infield again. Instead, his return took another turn against the As when he pulled up while rounding third base and had to leave with a left hamstring injury, a jarring development for a club that had only recently gotten him back from the injured list.
The setback sends the Royals right back into a familiar roster puzzle, with Nick Loftin and John Rave stepping in after Garcia exited. It also comes on the heels of Garcia dealing with a right hamstring strain earlier in the season, when he missed six games, which only deepens the concern around a player Kansas City has been counting on to stay on the field.
