The Royals are making a bullpen move with the trade deadline creeping closer, landing right-hander Nate Pearson from the Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Max Martin.
Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported Wednesday morning that Houston is sending Pearson to Kansas City. Jon Heyman of The New York Post added that Martin is headed to the Astros in the deal.
Pearson gives Kansas City another arm for the relief mix. The 29-year-old has spent six seasons in the majors and posted a 3.60 ERA in 16 appearances with Houston this season after being designated for assignment by the Astros.
His big league track record has had its ups and downs. Pearson owns a 4.99 ERA in 139 career games, but his work this year has been a step forward.
Before Houston, he spent four seasons with the Blue Jays beginning in 2020, where he put up a 5.21 ERA. He also had a run with the Cubs, logging a 2.73 ERA in 19 outings in 2024 before a rough 9.30 ERA in 11 appearances in 2025.
Martin, 22, was a 10th-round pick by Kansas City in the 2025 MLB Draft. The right-hander has turned in a 2.01 ERA over 40.1 innings this season and has a 1.72 ERA across 47 career minor league innings.
With a little under two weeks left before the MLB trade deadline, the Royals are adding a Major League reliever to their bullpen while parting with a young pitching prospect.
