Royals Face One Offseason Question After Another Disappointing Season

As the Kansas City Royals eye a roster overhaul after a tough 2026 season, strategic free-agent acquisitions could be key to revitalizing their bullpen and adding depth to their lineup.

The Royals are heading into an offseason with a clear list of problems, and the latest episode of “One Royal Way” zoomed in on the kinds of moves that could help fix them in 2027.

Host Joel Penfield made pitching the centerpiece of the conversation. In his view, Kansas City could use one or two starting pitchers to help settle the rotation, and he floated Kevin Gausman, Casey Mize and Shota Imanaga as possible free-agent fits. He also pointed to Foster Griffin as a name worth watching, especially after the left-hander found success in Japan.

The bullpen came up as another major issue, and one that clearly needs attention after it hurt the Royals in 2026. Penfield mentioned Adrian Morejon as one of his favorite potential targets because of what he has done recently, while also bringing up Alex Vesia and Jonathan Loáisiga as other possibilities.

Even so, he stressed that one offseason move alone probably won’t be enough there. Kansas City, he said, will likely have to mix free-agent additions, trades and internal improvement to put together a dependable relief group.

Behind the plate, Penfield suggested the Royals should look for a veteran backup catcher to ease Salvador Perez’s workload. He said Perez could move into more of a primary designated hitter role while Jensen takes on a bigger share of the catching duties.

The outfield also needs help, and Penfield named Randy Arozarena as a player who could make sense for Kansas City. He cited Arozarena’s power and speed as traits that could deepen the lineup and lift the offense.

Penfield’s bottom line was straightforward: the Royals need to be aggressive in finding real impact talent, but they also need to avoid expensive deals that don’t solve the team’s biggest holes.

Jac Caglianones Next Royals Role Just Got A Lot Bigger

Jac Caglianones rapid rise gave the Royals one of the clearest bright spots in their 2026 season, and it came with more than just improved production at the plate. After a uneven 2025, he ended up leading Kansas City in several offensive categories, a sign that his game has started to catch up with the expectations that followed him into the organization. For a club still sorting out its long-term core, that kind of development changes the conversation quickly.

The next question is where he fits best as Kansas City looks ahead to 2027, because his value may now stretch beyond the bat alone. The Royals are weighing his defensive versatility as part of that plan, while the system around him also keeps producing reasons for optimism. Zion Rose earned his own attention with an Arizona Fall League assignment, and Angeibel Gomez continued to stand out despite his age, giving the front office even more to think about as it maps the rosters next step. Travis Kelce Drew A Bigger KC Sports Turnout Than Fans Expected

Travis Kelces presence at the 7th Annual Celebrity Challenge fundraiser gave Kansas City sports fans another reminder of how deeply tied he is to the city beyond football. The event supported Operation Breakthrough, the Kansas City nonprofit that serves children in poverty, and Kelces foundation, 87 and Running, has worked closely with the organization. It also drew a familiar cross-section of local sports figures, with professional athletes from several Kansas City teams showing up for a cause that has become part of the areas broader sports fabric.

What stood out this time was the turnout, which felt bigger than many around town might have expected for a charity event. Kelces draw has long extended beyond the Chiefs, and the way other Kansas City athletes turned out only reinforced how much pull he has across the citys sports scene. For a fundraiser built around community work, the crowd said as much about his standing in Kansas City as any headline could. [Read more 🡒]

Royals Fans Have A New Reason To Dream On Zion Rose

Zion Rose has already given Royals fans a reason to start looking a little farther down the road. The sixth overall pick in the 2026 draft has made a strong first impression with High-A Quad Cities and then in the Arizona Fall League with the Surprise Saguaros, where the bat has been the part of his game that keeps standing out. A grand slam only added to the buzz, and it fits the early belief around him as a player whose offensive upside could eventually play anywhere in the middle of a lineup.

The Royals are still waiting on the rest of the package to catch up, of course, and that is what makes Rose such an interesting follow. His defense is still in the developmental stage, but the organization sees a path for him to become a regular outfielder if everything comes together. For now, he is giving the club something it loves to have in any prospect, a reason to imagine the ceiling before the details are fully settled. [Read more 🡒]
