Royals Eye Potential Move for Former Pirates Outfield Standout

Could taking a chance on Jack Suwinski be the Royals' strategic move to bolster their outfield depth?

The Kansas City Royals have had an offseason that’s been more about subtle improvements than headline-grabbing moves. While the chance for a major free-agent acquisition has slipped away, there’s still room for the Royals to enhance their roster with strategic, under-the-radar additions.

Enter Jack Suwinski, recently designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Suwinski might not be the blockbuster name fans were hoping for, but he could be a valuable piece to bolster the Royals' outfield depth.

On paper, Suwinski's recent stats might not jump off the page. In 59 games last season, he posted a .147/.281/.253 slash line with a 55 wRC+ and -0.5 fWAR.

These numbers certainly don’t scream “instant impact.” However, let's not forget the potential he displayed back in 2023 with a 2.7 fWAR and a 112 wRC+.

The Royals, having already added players like Isaac Collins and Lane Thomas, along with existing talents such as Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel, aren’t necessarily in need of a guaranteed MLB starter. Instead, they could benefit from a player like Suwinski, who offers depth and potential upside.

Suwinski’s ability to draw walks is a promising aspect of his game. Despite a tendency to strike out, he has maintained a walk rate of at least 9.7% throughout his four seasons in the majors, including an impressive 13.5% last season. His 16.8% chase rate further highlights his plate discipline.

While his hard-hit rate has declined since his 26-homer season in 2023, Suwinski still showed potential with an 11.8% barrel rate and 73.9 mph bat speed in 2025. A change of scenery could reignite his power, especially moving from PNC Park-one of the toughest venues for home runs-to Kauffman Stadium, where recent changes to the outfield walls could favor hitters.

Defensively, Suwinski brings versatility, capable of covering all three outfield positions while contributing positively in Outs Above Average (OAA).

With a one-year, $1.25 million contract and the flexibility to move between the majors and minors, acquiring Suwinski through a waiver claim or minor trade could be a savvy move for the Royals. It’s a low-risk gamble with the potential for a rewarding payoff, making him a candidate worth considering for Kansas City’s roster.
