Details are starting to come into focus for the Royals’ planned downtown stadium, and the latest permit filing points to a project that could stretch across the rest of the decade.
Chris Higgins of the Kansas City Star reported on the filing, which suggests construction could begin this year and run through 2031, though those dates are still subject to change. Other parts of the broader area have timelines that extend to 2035 or even 2040.
Crown Center spokesperson Tina McGuire said the filing is part of a larger process tied to the site’s future.
“We are pleased to continue the planning process with the Kansas City Royals as we work toward the reimagining of Crown Center, and this filing is part of that process,” Crown Center spokesperson Tina McGuire said. “While this is a long-term project that will take shape over the coming years, we are encouraged by the progress made to date and are excited to have reached this point.”
Gabe Swartz and Samantha Boring of KCTV5 also reported on the plans, which outline a project area of roughly 91 acres. The district is expected to be divided into 10 areas, with the goal to “build upon the area’s established role as a regional destination.” Each section would move on its own timeline, with the Royals aiming to open the new stadium by the 2031 season and complete all 10 areas by 2040.
The plan also makes clear that the schedule is not locked in.
“However, anticipated commencement and completion dates for each phase are subject to change and are dependent upon market demand,” the plan said.
Parts of the proposal were written by Populous, which will be the design lead and architect for the project. Populous also supplied design guidelines that will shape the stadium and the surrounding development.
