KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Royals fans, get ready for a new way to experience the action this season. As the Kansas City Royals gear up for their home opener, they’re introducing two cutting-edge tools designed to elevate your viewing experience both at home and in the stadium.
This season, the Royals join a select group of MLB teams incorporating wire cams, but they’re taking it a step further by also deploying a drone. Only the Milwaukee Brewers are matching this dual-camera innovation.
Scott Lichtenauer, the Royals’ group director of branded content and innovation, is excited about what these new perspectives bring to the table. He describes them as a fresh, engaging way to capture the game’s dynamic action, offering fans a more immersive experience.
The wire cam is all about showcasing the athleticism on the field, while the drone is set to provide stunning visuals of Kauffman Stadium, capturing everything from the bustling crowds to the lively tailgating scenes. The drone will operate at altitudes between 100 and 200 feet, ensuring it doesn’t hover over players or fans.
With FAA clearance handled by MLB and skilled freelancers at the controls, the wire cam is a marvel in itself, capable of reaching speeds up to 55 mph. This technology streamlines the broadcast by eliminating the need for separate shots of the pitch and outfield, allowing fans to see the entire play unfold seamlessly.
Players and the broadcast team are reportedly thrilled with these advancements, which aim to showcase the game in the best possible light. Fans in the stadium won’t miss out either, with replay shots featured on Crown Vision, the Royals’ impressive jumbotron.
The Royals even offered a sneak peek of what’s to come with some drone footage captured during a recent demonstration. It’s clear that this season, the Royals are committed to bringing fans closer to the action than ever before.
