Maikel Garcia’s latest injury scare hit the Royals at a bad time on Thursday afternoon, and it came just days after he had finally returned to the lineup.
Garcia, who had missed 46 games with a left-hand muscle strain before coming off the injured list on Monday, left Kansas City’s series finale against the A’s with a left hamstring injury. The trouble showed up in the bottom of the first inning as he rounded third base, when he suddenly pulled up, hopped around and grabbed at the hamstring in pain. He then made his way off the field slowly and gingerly while A’s third baseman Max Muncy trailed him and completed the fielder’s choice out.
The Royals reshuffled their defense in the next half-inning. Nick Loftin moved from right field to third base, and John Rave came into the game in right field. Kansas City later announced that Garcia had exited with the hamstring injury.
This isn’t the first time Garcia has dealt with a hamstring problem this season. He strained his right hamstring on May 30 in Texas and missed six games that week, though that injury did not send him to the IL.
Garcia’s return had been part of a welcome boost for Kansas City this week, alongside Vinnie Pasquantino’s activation from the injured list. The two immediately gave the Royals a lift against the A’s at Kauffman Stadium, combining to go 11-for-26 with five runs, four extra-base hits and five RBIs over the three games before Thursday’s finale.
