Bobby Witt Jr. put on a show Monday night that left fans and teammates alike buzzing. Playing for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, Witt delivered a performance that was nothing short of spectacular. With two doubles, one that had everyone marveling at his speed, a stolen base, and a pair of jaw-dropping defensive plays, Witt reminded us why he’s considered a generational talent for the Royals.
Cole Ragans, who’s seen Witt’s magic before, summed it up perfectly: “I’m not shocked, but it never gets old.” Jonathan India echoed that sentiment, calling Witt a “six-tool player.” It’s clear that Witt’s ability to make the impossible look routine is something special.
During the Royals’ Spring Training on Tuesday, a 4-3 loss to the Mariners, Witt’s defensive heroics were still the talk of the clubhouse. In back-to-back innings, he robbed Mexico’s hitters with plays that had everyone scrambling to catch a replay.
First, he made a full-extension dive to snag Alejandro Kirk’s one-hopper, throwing from his knees for the out. Then, he followed it up with another diving stop and a rocket throw to first.
Even Pirates ace Paul Skenes, a reigning Cy Young Award winner, couldn’t help but grin in amazement. “One of the best plays I’ve ever seen,” he said. Royals reliever John Schreiber added, “It’s always great knowing he’s on our team.”
Watching Witt in action is a treat not just for Royals fans but for anyone who loves the game. As catcher Carter Jensen put it, “It’s normal for K.C. people because he does it all season long, but it’s cool that everybody else is seeing it.”
Meanwhile, Cole Ragans bounced back from a tough outing against the Rangers with a solid performance against the Mariners. Over 3 1/3 innings, he allowed two runs and struck out five.
Ragans was particularly pleased with the swing and miss he generated, especially on his slider. “Feel-wise and stuff-wise, I felt good,” he said, noting the importance of working on his pitches against lefties.
In other news, utility man Nick Loftin was scratched from the lineup due to “general soreness.” Manager Matt Quatraro kept details under wraps, saying they’ll assess Loftin’s condition before making any decisions.
As Spring Training rolls on, the Royals are witnessing some standout performances, and if Witt’s recent showcase is any indication, fans are in for an exciting season.
