The Kansas City Royals fanbase has been buzzing about the team's start to the 2026 major league season. But there's more to keep an eye on beyond the big league action, especially with the minor league season kicking off. Royals fans recently got a glimpse of the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers' Opening Day roster, adding another layer of excitement.
However, not all news was positive. The Royals community learned that Asa Lacy, once a promising first-round pick, is starting the season on the injured list. This move, which was quietly made official on March 17, caught many fans off guard as the season began.
While the specific nature of Lacy's current ailment remains unclear, his history is well-documented. After undergoing Tommy John surgery and dealing with recurring back issues, it's anyone's guess what might be sidelining him this time. Regardless, it's severe enough for the Royals' Double-A affiliate in Northwest Arkansas to place him on the 60-day IL.
In addition to Lacy, the team has made several roster moves. Pitcher Chandler Champlain and outfielder Tyler Gentry were released, while infielder Javi Vaz, and pitchers John Means, Anthony Simonelli, and Tyson Guerrero also joined Lacy on the 60-day IL. Meanwhile, Sam Ruta is on military leave, serving in the Army.
Lacy, now 26, was a top-five pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, chosen fourth overall by Kansas City. Back in 2021, he was among the Top 30 prospects in baseball, fueling plenty of excitement among fans.
Yet, his career has been marred by injuries, transforming him from a potential ace to a question mark. He hasn't pitched in affiliated ball since 2022, has never advanced beyond Double-A, and has only logged 80.0 innings in the minors.
Despite Lacy's setbacks, the Royals aren't left in the lurch. Their major league rotation is solid, and the farm system, while not the most thrilling, boasts promising talent on the mound.
For now, the Royals find themselves in a familiar position, waiting and hoping that Lacy can eventually make his way back to the mound.
