Travis Kelce made his feelings on the NFL’s new first-down measurement system crystal clear during the Chiefs’ preseason finale against the Seahawks.
The Kansas City tight end played only a limited role in the 9-9 tie, but he still found himself at the center of one of the night’s loudest moments. During a virtual measurement, Hard Knocks cameras caught Kelce on the sideline letting officials have it as a first down hung in the balance.
“Man! Bring them chains back, man. This is some bulls-t,” Kelce yelled.
The moment landed on the latest episode of Hard Knocks, which has followed the Seahawks all offseason and caught Kelce’s rant in full view. Seattle nose tackle Uso Seumalo, who was mic’d up for the game, immediately sided with him after hearing the complaint.
“See, Travis Kelce agrees with me,” Seumalo told a teammate.
Kelce’s frustration came against the backdrop of a major NFL change. The league has moved from the traditional chain-gang measurement to Sony’s Hawk-Eye virtual system, which it says makes officiating faster and more precise. The switch came after a controversial spot in the AFC Championship Game, when cameras couldn’t clearly show whether Josh Allen had reached the line to gain.
The new setup uses six 8K cameras to track the ball’s position, and the process takes about 30 seconds, quicker than the old chain measurement. But speed hasn’t made it easier for some veterans to embrace. Kelce is one of them.
Now entering his 14th season at 36 years old, Kelce has already turned heads in Kansas City this summer with the intensity he’s brought to training camp. That same edge showed up against Seattle, even in a preseason game with little at stake in the standings.
He’s also spent camp working in a different mode, mentoring the next generation and delivering a rookie reality check earlier this offseason. So the complaints about Hawk-Eye fit neatly with the rest of his old-school profile.
The Chiefs finished their preseason with the tie, and Kelce’s rant is unlikely to move the league off its new system. The chain crew still remains in a backup role, but the virtual measurement is staying put.
