Travis Kelce got a front-row look at a side of Patrick Mahomes most fans never see.
The Chiefs tight end has been around long enough to know what it takes to survive in the NFL. Since joining Kansas City in 2013, Kelce has stacked up numerous Pro Bowls and three Super Bowl rings, but the grind still wears on him. After the Chiefs’ disappointing 2025 season, when Kansas City missed the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade, Kelce even thought seriously about stepping away.
Instead, he showed up to training camp in excellent shape and has looked sharp in practice. Part of that may be tied to what he watched unfold around Mahomes last season. The quarterback suffered an ACL and LCL injury on December 14, 2025, against the Los Angeles Chargers, then pushed through rehab with a clear goal of getting back on the field.
Kelce said on the ‘New Heights’ podcast that he saw exactly how much that process weighed on Mahomes.
“I could see the determination. I could see the frustration in his mind that it got to this point this year,” Kelce said in the ‘New Heights’ podcast.
“And, you know, that was - that’s a huge reason why I’m still playing the game because I know that guy. Like, I want to be there for that guy, you know, in every aspect of the game,” he added.
That experience left Kelce even more fired up about what comes next for Kansas City.
“And I think that’s - that’s exciting coming into the year. We get a fresh start,” he added.
The big question now is whether Mahomes will be on the field when the season opens. He was cleared in July and has taken part in nearly all of the Chiefs’ training camp practices. Andy Reid offered a cautious update on his quarterback recently.
“He’s doing great,” Reid said. “We’ll just see.
I’m literally taking it day by day. There are no predictions here on anything.”
Kelce saw the road Mahomes had to travel. Now the Chiefs are waiting to see how it all plays out.
