Travis Kelce had a legal fight on his hands even as one of the biggest weekends of his life was unfolding.
According to TMZ, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was actively dealing with a trademark lawsuit in the days leading up to his wedding to Taylor Swift at Madison Square Garden. Kelce and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes are both named as defendants in a federal case brought by Boston-based 1587 Sneakers.
The company says the pair’s Kansas City steakhouse, 1587 Prime, infringes on its trademark. Court filings show Kelce and Mahomes are trying to get the case thrown out of New York, arguing they do not have enough connection to the state because they play for the Chiefs in Missouri and their restaurant is also based in Kansas City.
1587 Sneakers sees it differently. The company argues that because Kelce and Mahomes regularly show up in national advertising campaigns, they can be sued in New York.
The restaurant name comes from the players’ jersey numbers, 15 and 87. Kelce and Mahomes opened the upscale steakhouse in September 2025 with hospitality group Noble 33. The spot is located inside the Loews Kansas City Hotel and has quickly become one of the city’s most prominent dining destinations.
The sneaker company says it started using the 1587 name in 2023 to honor the first recorded arrival of Filipino sailors in America. It also argues that customers could assume the restaurant and the sneaker brand are connected.
The lawsuit is seeking damages and an order blocking Kelce and Mahomes from continuing to use the name.
Even with the dispute hanging over him, Kelce still had his wedding weekend. He married Swift on Friday in a star-studded ceremony at Madison Square Garden, with guests reportedly coming from sports, music, film and television.
For now, the trademark case is still unresolved as Kelce and Mahomes keep expanding their business interests away from football.
