Travis Kelce made his feelings on the NFL’s new first-down measurement system pretty clear during the Chiefs’ preseason finale.
Kansas City played Seattle to a 9-9 tie, and Kelce had a limited role in the game. But a sideline moment from the tight end ended up drawing plenty of attention anyway. Hard Knocks cameras caught him reacting to a virtual measurement with a full-throated complaint at the officials.
“Man! Bring them chains back, man. This is some bulls-t,” Kelce yelled from the sideline.
The moment landed on the latest episode of the show, which has followed the Seahawks all offseason. Seattle nose tackle Uso Seumalo was wearing a mic for the game, and he immediately took Kelce’s side after hearing the rant.
“See, Travis Kelce agrees with me,” Seumalo told a teammate.
Kelce, now entering his 14th season at 36, has already been one of the more noticeable figures in Chiefs camp this summer. His edge showed up again against Seattle, even in a preseason game with little on the line.
The NFL replaced the old chain-gang process with Sony’s Hawk-Eye virtual system. League officials say the change is meant to speed things up and improve accuracy. The switch came after a controversial spot in the AFC Championship Game, when cameras couldn’t clearly show whether Josh Allen had reached the line to gain.
Under the new setup, six 8K cameras track the ball’s position, and the league says the measurement takes about 30 seconds, quicker than the old chain procedure.
Still, quicker doesn’t mean more comfortable for everyone. Veterans like Kelce grew up with the chain crew sprinting onto the field, and the move to a camera-driven system clearly hasn’t won him over. Even while he’s been mentoring younger players this offseason, including delivering a rookie reality check earlier in camp, his complaint about Hawk-Eye sounded very much in character.
The Chiefs finished their preseason with the tie against Seattle, and Kelce’s sideline rant isn’t going to change league policy. The chain gang remains available in a backup role, but the virtual system is here to stay.
