Ahead of Train’s Wednesday, Aug. 12 concert at Morton Amphitheater in Riverside, frontman Pat Monahan had a little something extra to talk about besides the show: he was one of the guests at Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s wedding, and he came away calling the ceremony “magic.”
Monahan spoke with The Star during a 10-minute interview and said he was caught off guard by the invitation, especially since he and Swift hadn’t spoken in a long time. The two have a shared musical history, having co-written “Babe,” the song that later became a hit for Sugarland in 2018. It had originally been intended for Swift’s 2012 album “Red,” but didn’t surface until 2021, when it appeared on “Red (Taylor’s Version).”
Monahan said the connection between them never really went away, even if they weren’t in regular contact.
“It’s one of those friendships that you don’t need to be around each other all the time to remember that you have, you know, a meaningful connection,” Monahan said.
He also said he and Swift “did some really cool things together that they’ve never forgotten about,” and that being included in the wedding meant a lot to him.
The ceremony drew a crowded guest list, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other teammates in attendance, along with KC-area comedians Jason Sudeikis, Paul Rudd, Eric Stonestreet, Heidi Gardner and Rob Riggle. Pop stars Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Gracie Abrams, Kesha and The Chainsmokers were there too, as was Swift’s longtime co-songwriter and producer Jack Antonoff. “Good Morning America” anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos attended, and Adam Sandler officiated the wedding.
Monahan said the ceremony between Kelce and Swift at Madison Square Garden in July was wonderful, and he said he’s happy for them. He compared what he saw to his own marriage, saying, “When I met my wife and we got married, I knew that that was the magic of my life,” Monahan said. “You could tell during that ceremony that they had those same feelings for each other, and that was the best part of the whole thing.”
The couple tied the knot on July 3 with friends and family in New York City, renting out the home of 2025-26 NBA champion New York Knicks.
Their relationship has deep Kansas City roots. Kelce first tried to hand Swift his phone number at her Eras Tour show at Arrowhead Stadium in July 2023, but didn’t succeed.
He later talked about the moment on his New Heights podcast, and Swift heard it. A couple of months later, she showed up to watch him play at Arrowhead Stadium, and the two left together after the Chiefs’ blowout win in his “getaway car.”
Nearly two years later, Kelce proposed to Swift in the backyard of his Leawood home.
