Sean McVay Eyes New Role For Trent McDuffie

Rams head coach Sean McVay is eager to incorporate Trent McDuffies versatility into the lineup, inspired by Steve Spagnuolos strategic use with the Chiefs.

The Rams are making waves with a bold move that has the NFL buzzing. In a recent chat on the “Up & Adams” show, Rams head coach Sean McVay shared some insights with host Kay Adams at the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

The big news? Los Angeles has snagged All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Chiefs, sending a package of draft picks, including their 2026 first-rounder, to Kansas City.

McVay is clearly excited about McDuffie's versatility. “I think you’re going to see him in a lot of different spots,” McVay noted.

“He’s a guy that can play a lot of locations.” This flexibility is something the Rams are eager to exploit, especially with fellow cornerback Quentin Lake also in the mix.

Under the guidance of Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo last season, McDuffie showcased his adaptability by playing outside nearly 70% of the time and lining up in the slot about 20% of the time. McVay praised Spagnuolo’s strategic use of McDuffie, emphasizing how it maximized his impact on the field.

But McDuffie isn’t the only former Chief heading to Los Angeles. The Rams have also signed cornerback Jaylen Watson, adding even more depth to their secondary.

Back in Kansas City, the Chiefs are recalibrating their defense. With veteran Kristian Fulton and rising star Nohl Williams projected as starting cornerbacks, there’s anticipation that the Chiefs will bolster their lineup during the NFL Draft, targeting key additions on both Day 1 and Day 2, and possibly again on Day 3. It’s a strategic pivot for Kansas City as they look to maintain their defensive prowess.
