Rams Stun NFL by Signing Two Chiefs Corners in Free Agency

Rams' defensive overhaul positions them as Super Bowl favorites with key acquisitions leading the charge.

The Los Angeles Rams are making a bold statement for the 2026 NFL season, going all-in with Matthew Stafford leading the charge. While the future beyond Stafford's tenure remains uncertain, the Rams are firmly in the mix as top Super Bowl contenders right now.

The Rams recognized the need to bolster their defense, particularly the secondary, and they've made some significant moves to address this. Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula is emerging as one of the standout figures in the NFL following the first day of free agency.

The Rams were already a force on defense, ranking ninth in the league by EPA per play last season. Now, they've addressed their biggest vulnerability by securing two standout cornerbacks. As ESPN's Bill Barnwell highlights, these moves make Shula a major winner in free agency.

General manager Les Snead has been busy, bringing back Kamren Curl to pair with Quentin Lake, creating a formidable safety duo. But the real game-changers came from the Kansas City Chiefs' cornerback roster.

Snead orchestrated a trade for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, sending pick No. 29, along with fifth and sixth-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and a 2027 third-rounder to the Chiefs. McDuffie was then secured with a four-year, $124 million contract extension. His presence is a massive boost for Shula and the Rams' defense.

But Snead wasn't done yet. He also landed Jaylen Watson, the Chiefs' top free agent cornerback, with a substantial $51 million deal over three years. These two acquisitions are game-changers for a Rams secondary that struggled last season.

With a strong defensive front, a solid safety pairing, and now the addition of two elite cornerbacks, the Rams have positioned themselves-and Chris Shula-as major winners in this offseason. The rest of the league should take note: the Rams are gearing up for a serious run.
