Patrick Mahomes turned a training camp blunder into one of the funniest moments of Chiefs camp, and he did it by leaning right into the joke.
During a recent practice, Mahomes dropped back and tried to connect with wide receiver Andrew Armstrong. The throw never got there. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP accidentally hit center Hunter Nourzad in the back of the neck.
The clip of the play spread quickly across social media, and it was the kind of miss that stands out because fans almost never see Mahomes sail one that far off target. The mistake was so strange that it immediately became a viral moment.
Mahomes, as usual, didn’t let the internet have all the fun. He responded to the clip with a meme from the 2005 comedy movie “The Longest Yard.” In it, Adam Sandler’s character misses a throw and says, “It slipped, I just ate popcorn.”

It’s a minor August hiccup, and Chiefs fans have plenty of reason to brush it off. Mahomes is coming off a difficult 2025 season in which Kansas City went 6-11, while he threw for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns.
As the Chiefs move toward the 2026 NFL season, the mood in camp is still light. Young players such as Mansoor Delane and Cyrus Allen are making early impressions, Andy Reid is continuing to work the offense, and Mahomes remains the center of attention. This time, though, the spotlight came with a laugh, and Nourzad was able to shake off the friendly fire.
