The Kansas City Chiefs are making waves in free agency, even as questions loom about Patrick Mahomes' recovery from a serious knee injury. Among their bold moves, the signing of veteran safety Alohi Gilman stands out.
Gilman, who previously suited up for the Los Angeles Chargers, was introduced to the media and didn't hold back on his thoughts about Mahomes. Once a divisional rival, Gilman now finds himself on the same team as the two-time MVP.
Reflecting on his experiences facing Mahomes, Gilman shared, "He’s obviously talented physically … he finds ways to do some magician stuff at the end. But the competitor - the warrior he is out there - you’ve got to appreciate it and respect it. When you’re around greatness like that, he’ll only make me better."
The Chiefs have locked Gilman into a three-year, $24.75 million deal, with $15 million guaranteed, adding a seasoned player to their evolving secondary. This signing is timely, as the Chiefs are undergoing significant defensive changes.
With the departures of key players like cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, and safety Bryan Cook, the Chiefs needed a reliable presence in their defensive backfield. Gilman’s experience fits perfectly into Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive plans.
Originally a sixth-round pick from Notre Dame in the 2020 NFL Draft, Gilman spent most of his career with the Chargers before a stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 2025. Last season, he appeared in 17 games, setting personal bests with 90 tackles, nine pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.
Gilman joins the Chiefs at a crucial juncture. Mahomes, who suffered a devastating knee injury in December 2025, is in the midst of an intense rehab process. The star quarterback is determined to be back for the start of the 2026 season.
Now, after years of trying to thwart Mahomes as a Charger, Gilman will be lining up alongside him, ready to contribute to the Chiefs' pursuit of continued success.
