Patrick Mahomes may spend training camp cut off from just about everybody, but there’s one person who still gets through.
At the Kansas City Chiefs’ annual camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, Mahomes keeps his focus narrow while the team lives in campus dormitories with thick walls and shaky phone service. The setup makes normal communication difficult, and with the grind of offseason work stacked into seven-hour-day training and rehab blocks, he basically disconnects from the outside world.
Except for Brittany.
Mahomes said he sticks to one non-negotiable rule while camp is underway: he has to text his wife. “St.
Joe’s dorm rooms, man, you don’t get a lot of text messages. I just try to make sure I text Brittany.
If I text Brittany, I’m usually in a good spot.”
That means friends, athletes and business associates can wait, but Brittany gets priority no matter how unreliable the service is.
It’s a small glimpse into the way Mahomes balances football and family, something that has only grown more complicated as his life has filled up with both a superstar NFL career and a busy household with Brittany. Since the Chiefs drafted him in 2017, he’s built one of the most decorated and dominant careers in league history. After spending his rookie season learning from the sideline, he took over as the full-time starter in 2018 and wasted no time turning the league on its head.
Now he’s working through the final stages of a major comeback, preparing to lead the Chiefs again just nine months after surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee.
