Travis Kelce got a close look at a version of Patrick Mahomes most fans never see.
The Chiefs tight end has spent more than a decade alongside Mahomes, but the road back from last season gave him a different perspective on his quarterback. Kansas City’s disappointing 2025 campaign ended with the team missing the playoffs for the first time in more than a decade, and Kelce admitted he had even seriously considered stepping away himself. Instead, he arrived at training camp in tiptop shape and has turned heads in practice.
What stood out to Kelce was the work Mahomes put in after the quarterback suffered an ACL and LCL injury on December 14, 2025, against the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes pushed through the rehab and kept his focus on getting back.
“I could see the determination. I could see the frustration in his mind that it got to this point this year,” Kelce said in the ‘New Heights’ podcast.
“And, you know, that was - that’s a huge reason why I’m still playing the game because I know that guy. Like, I want to be there for that guy, you know, in every aspect of the game,” he added.
Kelce said watching Mahomes handle that process only made him more confident about what’s ahead for Kansas City. “And I think that’s - that’s exciting coming into the year. We get a fresh start,” he added.
With opening week closing in, the biggest question around the Chiefs is whether Mahomes will play. He was cleared in July and has taken part in nearly all of the team’s training camp practices.
Andy Reid offered a cautious update on his quarterback recently. “He’s doing great,” Reid said.
“We’ll just see. I’m literally taking it day by day.
There are no predictions here on anything.”
Kelce saw the grind up close. Now the Chiefs wait to see how soon Mahomes shows everyone what he can do.
