The Chiefs keep sounding calm about Patrick Mahomes, and the latest look from training camp only seems to have reinforced that mood.
Dan Graziano of ESPN spent three days around Kansas City and came away with Mahomes still very much at the center of everything the Chiefs are doing. The quarterback is working in a bulky knee brace that he keeps adjusting, but the team continues to brush off any concern.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones put it simply: "He looks like Pat Mahomes," said Jones. "It doesn't look like anything's changed.
He's jumping around, being Pat. We've just got to get it going."
The bigger question now is whether Kansas City will even bother putting Mahomes in a preseason game. That still sounds doubtful, especially with the emphasis clearly on having him ready for Week 1.
"He's really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well," coach Andy Reid said after Saturday's practice. "We're just keeping an eye on him and letting the doctors guide us from there.
As long as he's safe, that's what we're looking at. So right now, for what we're doing, he's safe to roll."
One of the more interesting camp developments involves Kenneth Walker III, who is expected to handle most of the carries as the lead running back. The Chiefs also plan to use him as a blocker and as a receiver, with the receiving role standing out as the unusual part.
Walker has not been known for much strength in either of those areas, so that usage will be worth watching. Emmett Johnson was also mentioned in the discussion.
