The Chiefs’ decision to add Justin Tucker has already turned into a talking point, and Patrick Mahomes didn’t try to stir it up when asked about it on Wednesday.
Kansas City signed the former Ravens kicker to the practice squad this week while Harrison Butker has been working through a rough stretch. Butker has missed six kicks this season, including an extra point, and he’s just 2-of-6 from 50 yards or longer. He also missed two field goals in the Chiefs’ Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, which led Andy Reid to say his kicker was “off a bit.”
Tucker hasn’t played since the end of the 2024 season. The Ravens released him in May 2025 after he was accused of sexual misconduct by 16 massage therapists, according to The Baltimore Banner, and the NFL later handed him a 10-game suspension.
His name still carries baggage in Kansas City because of what happened before the AFC Championship Game in January 2024, when Mahomes and Travis Kelce had a heated exchange with Tucker while he warmed up on the Chiefs’ side of the field in Baltimore. Mahomes made it clear he doesn’t see that moment as some lasting feud.
“We haven’t had a lot of conversations because he’s obviously on the Ravens and I was on the Chiefs,” Mahomes said, via A to Z Sports. “But it wasn’t like we ever had any beef or anything like that.
I think at that moment it was just competitors being competitors. It was a big moment for everybody’s career, and you’re playing the AFC Championship Game.”
He kept going, framing it as part of the emotion of the moment rather than anything deeper.
“And he’s been a big, big-time kicker for a long time. Me and Trav were obviously competing, and we wanted to go out there and win.
And that stuff happened. But then you move on from that,” he continued.
“It wasn’t like we had some like long-standing beef that kind of carried over after the game. It’s kind of we won that game, and then I was on to the Super Bowl. So there’s nothing hostile, I guess you would say, moving forward from that,” Mahomes added.
On the signing itself, Mahomes didn’t dive in much. He said he trusts the front office, but his focus was elsewhere.
“I try not to get too high or too low on anything, but I know (Brett) Veach and them do a great job of bringing great players in,” Mahomes said. “But for me, it was about the Denver Broncos, and moving on, and continuing to get better.”

Chiefs Kicking Pressure Just Put Harrison Butker In The Spotlight
Harrison Butker has spent the week under a brighter spotlight than usual, but the veteran kicker responded in practice with a clean showing during a windy session. The Chiefs have been looking for steadier footing at the position after recent struggles, and Butker remains the preferred option as Kansas City turns its attention to an upcoming game against the Broncos.
The added pressure has only intensified since the Chiefs brought in Justin Tucker on the practice squad, giving the team another accomplished leg in the building and another voice in the mix. Both kickers have offered advice aimed at helping Butker sharpen things up, and for now the job still belongs to the player Kansas City trusts most when the game is on the line. [Read more 🡒]
Chiefs Head To Denver With One Rivalry Concern Looming Largest
A matchup with Denver arrives at a useful time for Kansas City, even if the stakes are already high. The Chiefs sit at 5-1 and the Broncos are right behind them at 5-2, which gives this one the feel of an early-season measuring stick in a division race that rarely stays tidy for long. Around the league, the conversation has centered on how Kansas City stacks up in a few key areas, from the ground game to whether the defense can keep pressure on the quarterback when the game tightens up.
Kansas Citys margin for error may come down to whether it can find steadier answers in the passing game and get more consistent disruption up front. The Chiefs have talent in the right places, but this trip to Denver comes with enough uncertainty to make it a real test of where they are right now, not just where the record says they should be. Chiefs Trade Buzz Builds Around A Familiar Fix At Receiver
The receiver market around the league is starting to shift, and one familiar name is already surfacing for Kansas City. Marquise Brown, now with the Eagles after two seasons in the Chiefs offense, is being mentioned by NFL insiders and analysts as a possible trade candidate as Philadelphia works through a difficult season and Browns role has been limited by injury and low usage.
For the Chiefs, the fit is easy to understand. They know Brown, they know what he can do when healthy, and they have a history of turning to players who already understand the system. The question is whether Philadelphia decides to move him at all, and if it does, how much of a return it would take to make a deal worth doing for a receiver whose recent production has been muted.
