Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was arrested Tuesday morning in Texas for a probation violation tied to alcohol use. The former MLB pitcher, who’s largely stayed out of the spotlight compared to other members of the Mahomes family, now finds himself back in the headlines with another legal issue-his latest in a string of alcohol-related offenses.
According to reports, Mahomes Sr. was booked into Smith County Jail just before 9 a.m. local time. No court date has been set at this time. The arrest stems from a violation of the terms of his probation, which he received following a DUI conviction in 2024.
That 2024 arrest came just days before Super Bowl 58-a game the Chiefs would go on to win. Mahomes Sr. later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years of probation, with the first year requiring what was described as “intense supervision.” It was his third DUI-related offense, underscoring a legal history that’s been building for over a decade.
Let’s take a closer look at that history.
Mahomes Sr.'s first known DWI arrest dates back to 2008 in South Dakota. He was later arrested again in 2018 and sentenced to 40 days in jail, which he served on weekends over the course of two years.
Then came the 2024 incident, which elevated the charge to “DWI for the third time or more.” That classification in Texas law typically signals a felony-level offense, and it placed Mahomes under strict probationary terms.
In addition to those three DWI arrests, Mahomes Sr. was also arrested for public intoxication in 2016 while attending a Texas Tech football game-during the time his son was the Red Raiders’ starting quarterback.
Now, with this latest arrest for allegedly violating probation, Mahomes Sr. could be facing more legal consequences. Given his record, any further infractions will likely draw increased scrutiny-not just from the legal system, but from the public eye as well, especially with his son continuing to be one of the NFL’s most prominent stars.
While Patrick Mahomes Jr. continues to lead the Chiefs on the field and chase greatness, his father’s ongoing legal troubles serve as a stark contrast-and a reminder that the spotlight, even when indirect, can shine brighter when a family name is already front and center in the sports world.
