Patrick Mahomes’ recovery is moving in the right direction, and Andy Reid sounded pleased with what he’s seeing at Chiefs training camp.
Speaking in a post-practice interview with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Reid said the quarterback is handling his rehab well and still looks like himself on the field.
“He's doing a great job,” said Reid, “he's really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well. We're happy with that; we know he's still progressing through it, but he sure looks sharp out here.”
That’s the kind of update Chiefs fans wanted to hear after Mahomes tore his ACL in Week 15 last season, a setback that immediately put his 2026 campaign in question. Mahomes has already said he wants to be back for Week 1 against AFC West rival Denver Broncos, and Reid’s comments at least point in a positive direction.

Still, the coach wasn’t ready to promise anything about Mahomes being under center when the regular season opens. Asked by Graziano whether the quarterback would play in the preseason, Reid stayed cautious.
“I don't know about that,” Reid noted. “I've got to see how that goes. I'm listening to the doctors, Dan.”
So the timeline is still fuzzy. There’s no firm word yet on preseason action or Week 1 availability, just the sense that Mahomes is making steady progress less than eight months after the injury.
And if that progress keeps up, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him ready when Kansas City kicks off on September 14th versus the Broncos.
