Marcus Harris went from making the Chiefs’ 53-man roster to landing on waivers in less than a day, but the door didn’t stay shut for long.
After a preseason that turned heads in Kansas City, Harris had done enough to make the initial cut. Then the Chiefs shifted gears, used their No. 9 spot in the waiver order to claim two defensive linemen, and needed space.
That meant Harris was out, at least temporarily. By Wednesday, though, he was back with the team on the practice squad.
The moves around him were busy. Kansas City added Bryson Eason, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, and Jack Pyburn, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To create room, the Chiefs waived Harris and cornerback Kevin Knowles. Knowles was claimed by the Buccaneers on Tuesday, while Harris cleared waivers and returned to Kansas City after the Chiefs released defensive tackle Cole Brevard to open a practice-squad spot.
For Harris, the bounce-back is a reward for a preseason that made him hard to ignore. With Omarr Norman-Lott out for all of training camp and the team’s three exhibitions, Harris took the opening and ran with it. Behind Chris Jones, Khyiris Tonga, and rookie Peter Woods, there was room for somebody to seize snaps, and Harris kept showing up play after play with a strong, physical effort.
His path to this point has been anything but stable. Harris entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2024, spent only two months on their practice squad, then moved to the New England Patriots and stayed with them through the 2025 draft before getting cut.
The Buffalo Bills gave him a look over the summer, but he was gone before roster cuts. Houston brought him back for one week last December before the Chiefs added him.
Eason now holds Harris’s former roster spot at defensive tackle, but the situation could change quickly. Kansas City clearly liked enough about Eason to pounce when San Francisco let him go, yet the Chiefs also need depth behind Tonga on early downs, and Harris looked ready for that job.
Given his track record of moving from team to team, Harris was a strong bet to clear waivers - and he did. Now he’s back where he was supposed to be, and the chance he briefly lost earlier this week may be waiting again if he can stick around.
