Patrick Mahomes hasn’t looked like a quarterback coming off major knee surgery in December. At Chiefs training camp, he’s been moving around, firing passes with precision, scrambling when he needs to and even hopping around with that familiar burst of energy when a play clicks.
That’s only part of the story, though. The version of Mahomes fans may get this season could be the one Chiefs Kingdom already knows well: Petty Pat. It’s the side of him that seems to feed off doubt, the one that enjoys proving people wrong.
That mindset has become a running joke around Kansas City, where a meme of Mahomes dressed as Ryan from “The Office” and taking notes gets shared constantly.
On Tuesday, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer added another layer to the picture in a training camp column that ended with three observations about Mahomes. Breer wrote, “First, he looks as in command as ever as he goes through his third coordinator change as a pro (just as he got a second run with Matt Nagy as OC, he’s now running it back with Eric Bieniemy),” Breer wrote.
“He also looks leaner (though his weight hasn’t changed). And I hear his deep ball has been really good through camp.
Also, folks here say he has taken notes of what people are saying about him and his team.”
If that’s true, Mahomes may have found yet another source of fuel.
Great players have always been able to pull motivation from all kinds of places, and Mahomes appears to be no different. After the Chiefs’ dreadful 6-11 season, that extra edge could matter just as much as the recovery from injury.
