Kenneth Walker Revives Chiefs' Run Game Amid Struggles

Kenneth Walker III aims to spark a resurgence in the Kansas City Chiefs' run game, bringing his explosive talent to a team eager to reclaim its winning form.

The 2025 NFL season is one the Kansas City Chiefs would rather leave in the past. Missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, their hopes were dashed in a December showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers. To make matters worse, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in that very game.

Injuries plagued the Chiefs all season, leading to offensive struggles that left fans and analysts scratching their heads. With Mahomes' status for the upcoming season still uncertain, Chiefs GM Brett Veach wasted no time in free agency, securing reigning Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III. This acquisition provides Kansas City with a reliable offensive weapon as Mahomes works his way back to full strength.

Walker, speaking with ESPN's Nate Taylor, expressed his excitement about joining a team with a rich history of success. "It's a winning culture," Walker noted. "Plenty of Super Bowls, they know what it takes to win."

Walker has quickly made a name for himself in the league, known for his explosive play and knack for making defenders miss. Despite an injury-marred 2023 season that limited him to 11 games, Walker's potential remained evident.

He often ceded red-zone opportunities to teammate Zach Charbonnet, who racked up 12 touchdowns to Walker's two. But when Charbonnet suffered a torn ACL in the playoffs, Walker seized the moment, averaging 104.3 rushing yards per game and racking up 135 yards in the Super Bowl against the Patriots.

Walker's postseason heroics made him a hot commodity, and the Chiefs hope he can restore balance to their offense. Adding to their arsenal, Kansas City has brought back former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who recently served as the running backs coach for the Bears, a team known for its formidable rushing attack.

Last season, the Chiefs' backfield duo of Isaiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt fell short, with the team ranking 25th in rushing offense and posting a league-low 6.5% explosive runs rate. Walker's first impression of Bieniemy?

"He's intense. The more he talks, the more intense he gets."

Bieniemy's history leans towards pass-heavy strategies, but with Mahomes' injury, the Chiefs might need to pivot. Walker's playmaking ability could be the catalyst for an evolved offensive approach in Kansas City, as they look to bounce back and reclaim their status as a powerhouse in the league.
