Justin Fields is staying put in Kansas City, and the quarterback trade chatter that briefly tied him to the New York Giants has already cooled off.
The Giants looked at multiple options after Jaxson Dart suffered torn ligaments in his left knee during a Week 2 loss to the L.A. Rams, but they ultimately passed on Fields and moved in a different direction.
New York instead turned to Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy to help stabilize the position.
Fields remains the Chiefs’ QB2 behind Patrick Mahomes, which is exactly where Kansas City planned for him to be when it acquired him in March. The idea then was simple: keep a capable veteran in place behind Mahomes and avoid any unnecessary risk at the game’s most important spot.
Over the weekend, Fields’ name came up as one of five possibilities for the Giants. Jordan Schultz reported that New York had interest after Dart’s injury, with McCarthy and former Chiefs quarterback Gardner Minshew, now with the Arizona Cardinals, also in the mix.
Jameis Winston stepped in for Dart in Week 3, and New York got a win over the Tennessee Titans. Still, the windy conditions made it difficult to draw firm conclusions about how the passing game might function. With McCarthy now added, the Giants’ depth chart also includes Winston and former Chiefs quarterback Jake Haener.
For Kansas City, there was never much reason to believe Fields would be moved. Mahomes’ recovery has gone as planned, removing the uncertainty that might have complicated the situation, but the Chiefs are in no position to gamble at quarterback.
Garrett Nussmeier is part of the conversation, too. The Chiefs took him in the seventh round of this spring’s draft, and he showed well in the preseason, but it’s a leap to treat him as the kind of player who can be one snap away from leading a Super Bowl contender. Nussmeier may become the long-term backup, but 2026 was always set up with Fields behind Mahomes.
Fields also gives Kansas City something else: real flexibility. His athleticism opens the door for creative packages and designed plays, and the Chiefs already tapped into that once with a play called " Heisman" that ended in a Kenneth Walker touchdown catch in Week 1.
The Chiefs are expected to be active ahead of the NFL trade deadline, but Fields is not the kind of asset they’re eager to move. Kansas City looks more like a buyer than a seller, and it would take a significant offer for another team to pry Fields out of that quarterback room.
