Chris Jones Is Becoming A Real Problem For The Chiefs Defense

The Kansas City Chiefs are grappling with defensive woes as their star defensive tackle Chris Jones struggles to regain his form amidst a challenging season.

The Kansas City Chiefs came out of their 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with plenty to sort through, but one of the quieter concerns sits right in the middle of the defense: Chris Jones is not giving them the impact they need.

A lot of the attention after Sunday night has landed on the offensive line and the wide receivers, and for good reason. Still, the defense has its own issue, and Jesse Newell of The Athletic dug into the decline in Jones’ production.

The surprising part is that other pieces around him are doing their jobs. The Chiefs drafted Mansoor Delane at cornerback and elevated Nohl Williams into a starting role, and both have been strong in coverage, though Delane was tested a bit by Jaxon Smith-Njigba on Sunday.

The pass rush has also gotten help elsewhere. George Karlaftis is healthy and, as Newell put it, is in a career year in pressures and quarterback hits.

R Mason Thomas has shown flashes as a rookie, and Ashton Gillotte is beginning to play well. So the issue isn’t that the defense has no answers.

It’s that Jones, the player they expect to anchor everything, hasn’t been delivering like he used to.

Newell pointed to the numbers, and they tell the story. Jones’ pressure rate has fallen from 10.6 percent last season to 7.3 percent this year, which ranks 66th among 93 qualified defensive linemen. PFF has also tracked a steep drop in his play: his defensive grade went from 90.2 in 2024 to 70.5 in 2025 to 57.0 this season.

Against Seattle, the struggles were even harder to ignore. Jones finished with one pressure in 45 snaps and earned a 36.1 PFF defensive grade. He also couldn’t track down Sam Darnold on a second-quarter scramble, a play that helped lead to one of Seattle’s 11 third-down conversions.

Jones has appeared on the injury report with a calf injury, and that clearly factors into some of this. But the season is moving into its middle stretch, and nearly everyone is carrying something by now.

He knows where the box score sits, with 0.5 sacks so far this season, and he has leaned on the familiar line that it’s about how you finish, not how you start. That may be true in theory. It just doesn’t do much to cover the reality of how little he’s impacted games lately.

And as Newell noted, there isn’t an easy fix here. The Chiefs took a chance on Jones rebounding after a rough season, but the league’s top-paid tackle hasn’t played like it yet. For now, they’re left waiting and hoping that changes soon.

Chiefs Trade Buzz Around Mahomes Just Got Very Real

The Chiefs loss at Seattle only sharpened the conversation around their passing game, and the timing is hardly subtle. Kansas City has been searching for more help at receiver, and the market is already starting to take shape around names that could matter if the front office decides to act before the season drifts any further.

ESPNs Jeremy Fowler reported that Brian Thomas Jr. is drawing interest from teams that include the Chiefs and Steelers, which gives Kansas City a high-end target to monitor if Jacksonville ever becomes willing to listen. There is also the familiar buzz around a possible Tyreek Hill reunion, though that idea comes with real uncertainty because of his recovery from a severe leg injury, leaving the Chiefs with more questions than answers for now. Chiefs Put Real Pressure On Harrison Butker At The Worst Time

Harrison Butkers uneven season has finally pushed Kansas City to add some real competition, and the timing only raises the stakes. The Chiefs are expected to bring in veteran kicker Justin Tucker to the practice squad, a move that signals the organization is no longer willing to wait around for Butker to sort things out on his own.

Butker has already missed multiple field goals and extra points this year, and the latest frustration has made the situation hard to ignore. Tucker, one of the leagues most accomplished kickers from his years in Baltimore, gives Kansas City a proven alternative and puts Butker on a short runway to clean up his performance before this turns into a full-blown job battle. Former Chiefs Are Still Scrambling For Jobs Across The NFL

A handful of former Chiefs have been bouncing around the league in recent days, a reminder of how quickly the bottom of NFL rosters can turn over once the season starts churning. Emari Demercado was among the latest to move on, after the Cowboys let him go following his earlier waiver from Kansas City, while Carson Steele reached an injury settlement with the Eagles and Amari McNeill landed on the Jets practice squad.

The rest of the chain reaction has been just as familiar for players trying to hang on in the league. Jason Brownlee was released from the Giants practice squad, and former Chiefs Cole Brevard, C.J. Hanson and Khalen Saunders also took part in tryouts with other teams, all of them still in the familiar waiting game that comes with fighting for another roster spot. [Read more 🡒]
