Chiefs Young Receivers Just Faced A Test Fans Can't Ignore

The Kansas City Chiefs showcased their depth and adaptability in a compelling victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, utilizing emerging talent to offset key injuries.

The Chiefs didn’t just beat the Chargers on Sunday at Arrowhead - they leaned on a patchwork receiver group and came away with a 22-6 win that showed what the next wave can do.

With Rashee Rice sidelined by a strained hamstring and Tyquan Thornton likely lost for the season with an ankle injury, Kansas City needed answers beyond the familiar names. It got them from Xavier Worthy, Cyrus Allen, Andrew Armstrong and Jalen Royals, and the offense didn’t blink much at all.

Worthy was the headliner. The third-year pro turned in one of the most productive outings of his career, finishing with seven catches for 73 yards. He was the focal point early, too, with Patrick Mahomes connecting with him on a 33-yard pass on the opening snap before the play was brought back to a short gain by penalty.

After Worthy, Allen and Armstrong stepped into bigger roles than they had seen before. Allen, a fifth-round draft pick who had entered the day with 10 offensive snaps and two targets, finished with two receptions for 23 yards. Armstrong, a rookie out of Cincinnati making his first NFL appearance, added a catch over the middle for 13 yards and a first down.

“They did good,” Patrick Mahomes said. “They played fast.

I mean, there were some learning moments here and there. But at the end of the day, they played hard, they played fast, they blocked when they needed to block, and they made the catches whenever they got the ball thrown their way.”

Royals also got more work, finishing with additional snaps and two catches as Kansas City stretched its depth chart to cover the absences.

For Allen, the assignment was simple in theory and tougher in practice: be ready when the call comes. He had flashed at times in offseason workouts and training camp, but wide receivers usually need time to earn their place in Andy Reid’s offense, where trust has to be built with both Reid and Mahomes.

This week, that timeline got compressed.

Practice reps for Allen, Armstrong and Royals increased, and the Chiefs needed them ready immediately.

“It was just about being ready,” Allen said. “I had to be the next guy up. I knew I could make plays.”

Armstrong had already made his mark in the preseason, where he led the Chiefs in receiving yards, but Sunday gave him his biggest NFL stage yet. He sounded like a player who knew exactly what the moment meant.

“Just being a part of this team, going out there catching passes from Patrick Mahomes,” Armstrong said. “Just being able to live a little bit on the field. That was fun.”

Rice could return at Seattle, which would put one of Kansas City’s top weapons back in the mix. But Sunday was about more than surviving injuries. It was also a glimpse of how the Chiefs’ young receivers are being pulled into the offense faster than planned.

“They’ll continue to get more and more involved in the offense,” Mahomes said. “And obviously not having the guys out there kind of accelerates their growth a little bit.

“I always have a lot of confidence in those guys. And obviously Xavier had a good day, another good day, and he keeps stacking those, and it’ll help out a ton as we get Rashee back.”
