The Chiefs’ wide receiver group just took another hit, and the timing couldn’t be much worse.
Jimmy Holiday was forced out of Tuesday’s practice early, adding yet another name to a position that has already been dealing with health issues throughout training camp in St. Joseph.
Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick reported that Holiday was carted away before practice ended. No additional details were immediately available.
Holiday’s path to this point has been a long shot that kept getting longer. After the 2025 NFL Draft, he signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent and wound up getting one of two rookie minicamp invites he had on the table, with the Chiefs and New York Giants both interested. Kansas City got him in first, and he had a contract by the end of the weekend.
He stayed on the 90-man roster through camp, then landed on the practice squad after active roster cuts in late August. He later held that PS spot through a one-week absence while the Chiefs made defensive line moves following the Mike Pennel signing.
The Buffalo Bills brought Holiday in for a tryout, but they ended up signing former Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman instead. Kansas City then brought Holiday back and eventually kept him around with a futures signing for the ’26 season.
That kind of commitment suggests the Chiefs’ staff sees something worth developing, even if the college résumé doesn’t jump off the page. Holiday spent three quiet seasons at Tennessee before transferring to Western Kentucky in ’23 and then Louisiana Tech in ’24. His career line across those stops: 63 catches, 913 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns.
Now the question is whether he can get back quickly enough to make the most of the biggest stage still left in front of him. The Chiefs open preseason on Saturday against the L.A.
Rams at Arrowhead, and that may be Holiday’s best chance to make noise. If he can’t go, the door opens wider for other receivers trying to grab attention, including Jason Brownlee, Jacob De Jesus, and Andrew Armstrong, with little summer runway left.
