Chiefs Trade Idea Targets A Quiet Need Before The Deadline

With the Chiefs facing a potential gap in their intermediate attack due to injuries, Darnell Mooney emerges as a savvy trade target to bolster their high-powered offense.

The Chiefs are 4-0, the offense is rolling at 0.14 EPA/play and sitting third in the NFL entering Week 6, and yet there’s still room to sharpen the edges. That matters now, with the Nov. 10 trade deadline creeping closer and Kansas City in position to buy while plenty of other teams are still sorting themselves out.

One of the most obvious pressure points showed up when the Chiefs put Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve. At the same time, the passing game has leaned a little less on the intermediate middle than it did during the back-to-back Super Bowl runs.

From 2022-2023, Kansas City went to that part of the field 18% of the time, and it was a gold mine - 0.59 EPA/target. This season, Patrick Mahomes has targeted the intermediate area, defined here as 11-20 yards, just 12% of the time.

That dip becomes more notable with Rashee Rice on the injury report and not practicing. Rice has been Mahomes’ favorite receiver in that window, and hamstring issues tend to linger in frustrating ways. That’s why a player who can cover that role now - and still make sense later if Rice misses more time - starts to look useful.

Darnell Mooney is not going to headline a trade market. But the fit is cleaner than the name value suggests. Since 2024, nearly 40% of his targets have come exactly where Kansas City could use help, and his usage splits show why.

Mooney’s production lines up with two things the Chiefs can use right now: help in the intermediate game if Rice is limited, and another deep threat alongside Xavier Worthy. That’s the kind of role fit that matters more than the label on the player.

The price would likely be modest, too. Mooney is nowhere near his career-best 2024 production, when he caught 64 passes for 992 yards and 5 touchdowns.

This year, he’s averaging just 3.4 targets, 1.6 catches and 21.8 yards per game while playing third fiddle to Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely. His market value matches his $3 million salary, and with only the rest of this season left on his contract, he’s the definition of a cheap rental.

The expected return? A 2027 or 2028 seventh-round pick.

It won’t turn heads. But for a Chiefs offense already humming, that kind of low-cost, targeted addition is exactly the sort of move that can matter when the margins get tight.

Chiefs Kingdom Is Bigger Than Most Fans Probably Realize

A look at Rally Houses sales data shows just how far the Chiefs reach has spread well beyond Kansas and Missouri. The retailer, which operates more than 300 stores across 29 states, said Kansas City has been its top-selling team in a wide swath of the country since 2009, a sign that the franchises appeal has become national rather than regional.

What makes the trend stand out even more is the footprint of those markets. Some of the states where Chiefs gear has moved best already have their own professional teams, which only underscores how much Kansas Citys recent success and increased media visibility have helped build a bigger fan base. For a team long tied to the Midwest, that kind of growth says as much about the brand as it does about what is happening on the field. [Read more 🡒]

Taylor Swifts Chiefs Streak May End During A Huge Home Game

Taylor Swifts run of Chiefs home appearances appears headed for a pause just as Kansas City gets ready for another significant AFC West game. Swift has been a fixture at 14 straight home games, often drawing as much attention as the action on the field, but this weekends matchup with the Chargers comes with a very different backdrop and a packed calendar on her end.

The timing points away from Arrowhead and toward Los Angeles, where Swift is scheduled to be part of the Academy Museum Gala the night before the game. The weekend is being framed around her career ambitions rather than a trip to support Travis Kelce in person, leaving open the possibility that one of the most visible off-field streaks tied to the Chiefs may finally come to an end. Chiefs Bye Week Could Force A Familiar Roster Decision

The Chiefs head into the bye week with a familiar problem hanging over their offense: the short-yardage run game has not been good enough through the first month. Kansas City has leaned on its ground game in key spots, but the results have left the staff weighing whether the answer is already in the building or still needs to be found before the trade deadline.

One option under consideration is a reunion with Kareem Hunt, whose history in tight-yardage situations makes him an obvious fit for the discussion. The Chiefs could also continue turning to new fullback Ben VanSumeren or shuffle roles among the backs already on hand, but the next stretch should reveal how urgent the need really is and whether the front office decides to make another move.
