The Kansas City Chiefs are staring at a trade deadline idea that would qualify as a full-blown shake-up: Xavier Worthy to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Brian Thomas Jr.
Fox Sports analyst Steven Ruiz floated the straight-up swap in a list of deals he’d like to see, and ESPN’s Ben Solak pushed the same basic framework as well, only with Kansas City adding a 2027 third-round pick to make it happen. The deadline is November 10, and the Chiefs are clearly in the market for help at wide receiver.
On paper, the appeal is easy to see. Kansas City wants another reliable downfield target, and Worthy has flashed but still hasn’t broken through for 700 receiving yards in a season. Thomas, meanwhile, has had trouble keeping up the huge rookie-year production that made him look like a star in the making.
Thomas’ 2024 season was the kind that turns heads fast. He caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie.
Since then, though, the production has dipped over the last two seasons, and his standing in Jacksonville has shifted too. The Jaguars recently benched him and cut back his role in the offense, which gives the whole idea some traction.
Ruiz was blunt about the proposal’s feel while still making the case for it. “This is the most off-the-wall trade proposal of the bunch, but this swap makes a lot of sense on paper,” Ruiz wrote in his October 30 piece.
The football fit is obvious enough. Kansas City has spent recent years loading up on smaller, faster receivers while trying to replace what it used to get from Tyreek Hill.
Thomas would give them something different - size, and a better chance to win contested catches. Worthy, on the other hand, could use a fresh start and a cleaner path to developing his game after showing promise without yet locking down steady production.
There’s also a financial piece here. Thomas is on a four-year, $14.6 million rookie contract that runs through the 2027 season, while Worthy is on a four-year, $13.7 million deal that also goes through 2027.
Ruiz also pointed to the idea that sometimes the change that matters most is not the team, but the role. And Kansas City has been down this road before.
In 2013, the Chiefs traded first-round receiver Jon Baldwin to San Francisco for A.J. Jenkins, with both players coming out of the same draft class.
A Worthy-for-Thomas deal would follow that same template.

Chiefs Waste Mahomes Outburst In Costly Loss That Changes AFC West
Patrick Mahomes did enough Sunday to make it look like the Chiefs might escape with another one, but the rest of the operation never quite held up. He threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, including a 73-yard strike to rookie Emmett Johnson, yet Kansas City still came away with a 27-24 loss to Denver that snapped its grip on first place in the AFC West for the first time this season.
The Chiefs paid for the kind of uneven afternoon that has a way of turning close games into costly ones, with the rushing offense never finding much traction and special teams leaving points on the field. Denver finished the job with a final defensive stand, and now Kansas City is left sorting through a division race that suddenly looks a lot tighter than it did a week ago. [Read more 🡒]
Chiefs Face A Real AFC West Test As Doubt Starts Creeping In
The rematch with Denver arrives at a moment when the AFC West picture feels a little less comfortable for Kansas City than it usually does. Week 8 brings another division test, and the buildup around this one has centered on how much recent performance and injury uncertainty could shape the Chiefs chances against a Broncos team that has already shown it can make things messy.
Around the preview table, the discussion has not been a simple Kansas City lean. Writers have weighed the matchup through the lens of recent form, key players and the health of both rosters, with the Chiefs outlook tied closely to who is available by kickoff. It is the kind of divisional game that can sharpen the standings in a hurry, and this one comes with just enough doubt to make the rematch feel bigger than a routine October meeting. [Read more 🡒]
Chiefs Face A Division Reality Check Against Denver
The Chiefs early-season cushion has already been trimmed once, and now the next division test arrives with even more at stake. After opening 5-0 before falling to the Seahawks, Kansas City heads into Week 8 with Denver waiting and the AFC West race suddenly looking a lot tighter than it did a few weeks ago.
This one carries the kind of late-October weight that can reshape a division race in a hurry. Kansas City has already handled the Broncos once this season, but the rematch brings a different level of urgency, with both teams eyeing the same spot at the top and the margin for error shrinking by the week.
