Chiefs Suddenly Have An O-Line Question They Can't Ignore

The Kansas City Chiefs face growing concerns about their offensive line dynamics after an unexplained benching of guard Kingsley Suamataia raises questions and impacts team performance.

The Chiefs’ offensive line keeps handing out questions, and Andy Reid isn’t offering many answers.

Kansas City benched left guard Kingsley Suamataia against the Denver Broncos, and Reid’s explanation amounted to little more than a shrug. According to a report from Nate Taylor of ESPN, the coach said the move was not punishment, then tried to shut the door on the conversation.

"This is just between Kingsley and I," Reid added when Taylor followed up on the initial questions. "It's not something that's earth-shattering. I'll just keep it there."

That only deepened the mystery around Suamataia, who was benched for the second time this season. He also dealt with issues last season, but the exact reason for this latest move remains unclear.

The timing made it even stranger. Suamataia was a full participant in the Chiefs’ three practices last week, Taylor reported, and he was not listed on the injury report.

Yet when pregame warmups began, backup guard Mike Caliendo was taking most of the left guard reps with the rest of the starting offensive line. Caliendo then played all 69 of Kansas City’s offensive snaps, while Suamataia logged only five snaps on special teams.

The switch did not exactly settle anything on the field. Running back Kenneth Walker III had another difficult outing, finishing with 69 yards on 21 carries. Then, on the final play of the game, Caliendo was the one who struggled in pass protection, allowing quarterback Patrick Mahomes to step up in the pocket and into the waiting arms of Malcolm Roach for the sack that ended it.

This was not the first time Reid had moved on from Suamataia. The earlier benching came against the Las Vegas Raiders, when Reid said he and the guard were just “working some things out.” Taylor also reported that Suamataia is likely to be back in the lineup against the New York Jets this week, which means the uncertainty around the situation is still very much alive.

And it is not happening in a vacuum. Josh Simmons was ejected last week and then placed on IR, and with Kansas City now riding back-to-back losses, the state of the offensive line has become impossible to ignore.

Reid will have to face the questions again during his media availability in the middle of the week. When a team is winning, vague answers can pass for restraint. When the losses pile up, they only make the silence louder.

Travis Kelce Takes Blame As Chiefs Sloppiness Starts Raising Concerns

Travis Kelce was back on the field against Denver despite the injury concerns that had followed him into the week, and he still managed to give the Chiefs a steady presence in the passing game with five catches for 67 yards. But the larger story out of the 28-24 loss was the sloppiness that kept showing up at the worst possible moments, a problem that has started to feel bigger than one bad night.

Kelce did not hide from his part in it, acknowledging mistakes and sounding frustrated with how he has played recently. For a Chiefs offense that has too often lived on precision in tight games, the margin for error keeps shrinking, and the latest setback only adds to the pressure to clean things up before the next chance slips away. Chiefs Let A Frustrating Broncos Loss Expose A Bigger Problem

A frustrating afternoon in Denver ended with the Chiefs on the wrong side of a 28-24 loss, and the final sequence only added to the irritation. Patrick Mahomes still put up 321 yards and three touchdowns, but Kansas City could not finish when it mattered most, including a key goal-line chance that came up empty late.

The bigger concern was how the offense let a winnable game slip away after a crucial penalty derailed a fourth-down attempt and the final drive never produced the decisive answer. Even the postgame reaction spilled beyond the field, with Brittany Mahomes taking to social media to criticize the referees call, a sign of how sharply the loss landed around the team. [Read more 🡒]

Chiefs Fans Have Every Reason To Be Furious Over This Flag

The late-game sequence in Denver left Chiefs fans with plenty to argue about, because Kansas City seemed to have the winning touchdown in hand on a fourth-and-goal snap before the flag changed everything. What had looked like the defining play of the night instead turned into a stoppage that flipped the pressure right back onto the offense, and the debate over the call quickly spread beyond the stadium.

The reaction was immediate, with fans and commentators questioning whether the movement on the line really justified the penalty. Former Fox Sports host Skip Bayless weighed in, and even Brittany Mahomes joined the chorus of voices wondering about the decision, underscoring how a single judgment call can dominate the conversation long after the game is over.
