The Chiefs are heading into Week 1 with a quieter problem that could matter just as much as the headline issues grabbing all the attention: safety.
Most of the noise around Kansas City has centered on Patrick Mahomes getting back on the field for his first snaps, preseason or not, since tearing knee ligaments last December. After that, the focus has mostly stayed on an offensive line that appears set to start a rookie free agent at left tackle. Those concerns are loud enough to crowd out almost everything else.
But safety is a problem.
Kansas City kept both of its starting safeties out of the third and final preseason game, and the injury situation behind them is not exactly calming. Andy Reid said Alohi Gilman has recovered enough to play in Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos, though he is still working his way back from a back injury. Chamarri Conner, meanwhile, is dealing with a knee injury that cost him multiple weeks of practices and exhibitions, leaving his Week 1 status questionable.
If that holds, the Chiefs could be thinner on the back end than many fans are realizing.
The biggest pressure point is Jaden Hicks. He’s the clear third safety option, and there’s reason to think his role can grow fast after he played 43 percent of the snaps last season.
He also turned in a strong preseason, which only raised expectations. Still, he hasn’t locked down a starting job the way many assumed he might, with mental lapses and a lack of trust from Steve Spagnuolo holding him back.
With Conner banged up, Kansas City may need Hicks to make a real jump right away.
And then there’s the rest of the depth chart. The Chiefs leaned into youth this preseason while sorting out the final roster spots, but that approach looks a lot different when the safety room is already thin.
Xavier Nwankpa, an undrafted free agent, was a good find for Brett Veach and might develop into something useful on defense. But asking him to handle anything beyond special teams this early would be a gamble.
That’s part of what makes this situation feel uneasy. In previous years, Kansas City has usually had a veteran around to provide a steady baseline at safety.
Mike Edwards filled that kind of role at times. Deon Bush did it a few years back.
Sometimes a younger player has stepped in, but usually with an experienced anchor next to him. Gilman gives them some of that now, but if Conner can’t go, the drop in experience and talent could be hard to miss.
There are alternatives, though none of them scream certainty. Chris Roland-Wallace can move to safety.
L’Jarius Sneed could help there too. Jadon Canady showed plenty of versatility in college, lining up in the box and at free safety, so he’s another option if Nwankpa gets overwhelmed.
Maybe Week 1 smooths itself out as the game unfolds. The Chiefs’ secondary has been rebuilt from the ground up after losing Jaylen Watson and Bryan Cook in free agency and trading Trent McDuffie, so there’s already a lot of moving parts.
Still, safety was one of the thinner spots on the roster before the injuries piled up, and now the margin for error is even smaller. Bo Nix and the Denver offense should get a chance to probe that weakness early.
