The Chiefs picked up an unwelcome surprise on Friday when Chris Jones showed up on the injury report with a calf issue just three days before Kansas City opens the season against Denver.
Jones had not been listed the day before, and he went from a full participant on Thursday to limited in Friday’s practice, according to Arrowhead Pride. That sudden shift is what makes this one worth watching as the Chiefs get ready to host the Broncos on Monday Night Football.
For Kansas City, the timing couldn’t be much worse. Jones is still the engine of the Chiefs’ front, a player who has spent his career wrecking interior protection plans and forcing offenses to account for him snap after snap. The 32-year-old has made six Pro Bowls, earned three first-team All-Pro selections and piled up 80.5 sacks across his first 10 NFL seasons.
The Chiefs’ initial injury report Thursday did not include any limited participants. Josh Simmons missed practice with a back injury, and Chamarri Conner sat out with a knee injury. Jones’ addition on Friday was a new development, not a carryover from earlier in the week.
There’s no sign yet that the calf issue will rule him out Monday. Kansas City still has Saturday’s practice before final game-status designations are released.
Still, the Chiefs would prefer to avoid any late-week concern involving one of their most important defenders, especially with Denver coming in behind quarterback Bo Nix and an offense that arrives in Arrowhead with expectations of its own. Jones’ status now becomes one of the biggest things to monitor before kickoff.
