The Chiefs’ offensive line keeps taking hits, and now the latest problem is at left tackle.
Josh Simmons has been out for more than a week with a back injury, according to a report from Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. Andy Reid said Simmons is being evaluated.
“He’s just getting his back checked out,” Reid said. “That’s the main thing.
He’s doing good when he’s in there. He’s just got a back.
Like any other injury, we’ve got to make sure that it’s. . . see if it’s right or what’s wrong with it.”
Simmons’ situation adds another twist to a complicated start in Kansas City. After an uneven rookie season, he had a notable offseason in which he dropped a significant amount of weight and then added muscle. The Chiefs staff met with Simmons and decided he needed to put on more pounds, but now he’s dealing with another injury issue.
The report also noted that Simmons was already viewed as a risk when Kansas City drafted him in the first round in 2025. He had torn his patellar tendon in his final season at Ohio State.
Last year, he played in only eight games for the Chiefs. He also left the team for a month in midseason to handle a personal matter, and a wrist injury ended his season early.
With Simmons sidelined, Kahlil Benson is set to start at left tackle against the Seattle Seahawks. That comes after a rough outing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, when Benson gave up a quarterback pressure and a strip sack. Patrick Mahomes will not play in this one, which changes the picture, but Reid still sounded like a coach preparing to see how Benson handles the spot.
“He’ll be over there at left tackle this week, and we’ll see how he does with it,” Reid said of Benson.
Kansas City has been scrambling up front, and the reshuffling hasn’t gone smoothly. The plan to move Benson and tackle Jaylon Moore inside as potential depth options has not worked out, and the Chiefs added another body yesterday when they traded with the New York Giants for Joshua Ezeudu. There’s been no word yet on whether Ezeudu will be available tomorrow night against the Seahawks.
