Chiefs Suddenly Have A Josh Simmons Problem They Cant Ignore

With Kansas City Chiefs' left tackle Josh Simmons sidelined by a back injury, concerns mount over potential long-term impacts on the team's offensive line stability.

The Chiefs’ offensive line picture just got a lot murkier, and Josh Simmons is right at the center of it.

Kansas City has already had to deal with injuries up front, but the latest update on its left tackle brings more uncertainty than comfort. Simmons has been out of practice and missed the team’s most recent preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a back injury. The Chiefs have labeled him day-to-day, but Andy Reid said Thursday that Simmons is going in for additional testing, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirmed that on SportsCenter.

“Josh Simmons, this one is interesting because he's got back issues. He's been classified as day-to-day, but I can say that he's undergoing more tests to see if there is something long-term here.

So this could be one to watch. They do have Jaylon Moore, who is kind of their swing, right tackle, left tackle.

He could start there if needed. It could be minor, but they're still identifying that situation.

That would be big. They're a much better offense when he's in there,” said Fowler.

That sounds ominous enough to get attention, but The Athletic’s Nate Taylor tried to slow the panic down a bit. His read was more reassuring, even if the situation still isn’t crystal clear.

“The Chiefs have said from the start that his injury is not significant ... I've been told that everything is going to be fine.”

Taylor goes on to say, however, that it's impossible to tell. “I've been told he's fine.

I've also been told he's day-to-day. I do love the fact that there are some Chiefs fans who are already like, 'Well, he's done for the season.'

I would not say that. I just think he probably needs a little bit of time to feel 100 percent and there's no reason to push it now because we're not in the regular season.”

For Kansas City, the stakes around Simmons go beyond one preseason injury. The Chiefs had plenty invested in him as the answer at left tackle, and the hope was that he could become the long-term fix on Patrick Mahomes’ blind side. Mahomes has cycled through a lot of left tackles in Kansas City, and Simmons was supposed to bring some stability to a spot that has been a problem for years.

That’s why this latest setback matters. If the injury turns out to be more serious than the team initially believed, it could complicate Kansas City’s plans for 2026.

The back issue also comes with its own warning label. Even when these injuries are not severe, they can hang around and require careful management, especially for an offensive lineman who absorbs constant force on every snap.

Simmons’ career in Kansas City has already been defined by availability as much as ability. The Chiefs took him with the 32nd pick in the 2025 draft, and he likely would have gone earlier if not for the torn patellar tendon he suffered on October 12, 2024. He came back from that injury and won the starting left tackle job for the 2025 season.

He looked good early, then stepped away from the team for a personal matter and missed four games. After returning, he played well again before another injury ended his season with a fractured and dislocated wrist. In total, Simmons has played only 14 games over his last two seasons.

That has made the story feel pretty straightforward: when Simmons is on the field, the talent is obvious. The challenge is keeping him there.

Kansas City is already dealing with injuries to Simmons and Trey Smith, and that leaves the offense in a rough spot to open the year. If Simmons is unavailable when the season begins, Jaylon Moore would likely slide to left tackle, undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson would be the right tackle, and Esa Pole would provide depth. In other words, the Chiefs could be looking at yet another reshuffled tackle combination to protect a quarterback coming off major knee surgery.

There is still hope that Simmons will be ready to go and anchor the left side for Kansas City. The Chiefs clearly believe in what he can be when healthy. For now, though, they’re waiting on the tests - and waiting on answers.

Brittany Mahomes Drew A Viral Reaction Chiefs Fans Will Notice

Brittany Mahomes has long been one of the more visible NFL spouses on social media, and her workout posts continue to travel well beyond the Chiefs orbit. This week, Kelly Stafford added to that buzz by reposting some of Mahomes fitness content on Instagram, punctuating it with playful remarks about Mahomes physique. The exchange was a reminder that both women have built sizable followings and have, over several NFL seasons, turned a public friendship into something fans across the league recognize.

For Chiefs fans, the timing is part of what makes it noteworthy. Staffords husband, Matthew Stafford, and Patrick Mahomes are set to meet when the Rams and Chiefs play at SoFi Stadium later this season, giving the off-field connection a little extra relevance. It is the kind of social-media moment that does not affect the standings, but still lands with a fan base that pays close attention to anything involving Mahomes, his family and the broader circle around the team. Patrick Mahomes Keeps One Training Camp Rule No Matter What

Training camp at Missouri Western State University always brings the same little inconvenience for Patrick Mahomes: the dorms make cell service spotty enough that a simple text can turn into a chore. Even so, the Chiefs quarterback sticks to one rule every day, making sure he reaches out to his wife Brittany no matter how unreliable the signal gets.

It is a small routine, but it says a lot about the rhythm Mahomes keeps even as camp ramps up around him. He is also working his way back toward the field after surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, which gives every part of his offseason, from rehab to the daily check-ins, a little more weight than usual. Chiefs Suddenly Have A Left Tackle Problem At The Worst Time

Josh Simmons has been sidelined for more than a week with a back injury, and the Chiefs are still in evaluation mode as they head into a game against the Seattle Seahawks. In the meantime, Kansas City is preparing to start Kahlil Benson at left tackle, a significant adjustment at one of the most important spots on the line.

The Chiefs also added some depth by acquiring Joshua Ezeudu in a trade with the New York Giants, but it is still unclear whether he will be ready to suit up right away. With a new starter at the position and another fresh face still working into the picture, the left side of the line has become a sudden issue for a team trying to keep its footing at a key point in the schedule.
