Former Chiefs cornerback Melvin Smith Jr. is back on the waiver wire, and that could put him in line for another NFL landing spot sooner rather than later.
Smith had just joined the Tennessee Titans after being released from Kansas City’s offseason roster, but on Thursday the Titans moved him back onto waivers. Tennessee made the switch after deciding it could sign Jaylon Jones instead.
Jones was waived by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this week, ending his run as a 2023 seventh-round pick. The Titans clearly valued Smith’s upside, but Jones brings 29 games of starting experience and special teams depth from an AFC South rival.
That development gives the Chiefs a possible path to bring Smith back, though it doesn’t sound especially likely. Kansas City already made its call less than two weeks ago, and a change of heart would be a surprise.
The more realistic outcome is a practice squad return, but that would require Smith to get through the waiver process untouched and also want to come back to Kansas City. There’s even a chance the Titans have something lined up for him on their own taxi squad if he clears.
For the Chiefs, the waiver position is at least favorable. General manager Brett Veach sits at No. 9 in the order and will remain there through at least Week 3.
Smith’s path to this point has been a grind. He earned a contract with Kansas City after a rookie minicamp tryout following the 2025 NFL Draft, when he went unselected.
The two-time Division II All-American put together strong work at Southern Arkansas, but that was only enough to get him a shot with the Chiefs. He made the most of it, sticking around on the practice squad for the rest of the year and later landing a futures deal for 2026.
However this shakes out, Smith doesn’t appear likely to be without options for long. Kansas City and Tennessee have both shown interest, and a practice squad opportunity could still be waiting as Week 1 approaches. Another team lower in the waiver order may have been keeping tabs on him, too.
