The Chiefs got a scare at training camp on Saturday when rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen appeared to suffer a knee injury during a special teams rep.
According to ESPN’s Nate Taylor, Allen “collided with Kaiir Elam as a gunner on a special teams punt rep. Allen stayed down with his helmet buried in the turf (and) then needed help to get off the field,” and he “left the field in the front of the cart with what appeared to be a left knee injury.”
It was a jarring turn for a player who has been trying to carve out a role in Kansas City’s passing game. Allen was a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Andy Reid has already seen enough to like what he’s getting.
“He's done a nice job,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid of Allen recently, per ESPN. “The quarterback trusts him.”
That trust has shown up on the practice field, too. Allen has already connected with Patrick Mahomes on a few memorable plays this summer, including one that stood out during a 7-on-7 period. ESPN described Mahomes working through his reads before finding Allen as his third option, then hitting him on a contested back-shoulder fade near the sideline against Nohl Williams, who has been the Chiefs' best cornerback so far in camp.
For Allen, those moments have meant a lot.
“It's still a surreal moment for me because I used to play the [Madden NFL] game with Pat a lot,” Allen said about Mahomes. “I'm pretty familiar with what he [does]. That was my favorite team.”
Allen played college football at Cincinnati, Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech. Chiefs fans will be watching closely to see how serious the knee issue is and how quickly he can get back on the field.
