The first real practice of the week brought a familiar kind of Chiefs anxiety: Chris Jones was on the report, and the back issue was enough to keep him out.
Kansas City has 13 days before its season opener on September 14 against the Denver Broncos, but the timing still made the absence feel loud. Jones missed Wednesday’s practice after roster cutdown day, and Andy Reid addressed it quickly to keep the situation from snowballing.
“Yes, Chris,” Reid said. “Likewise, Chris, his back was bothering him, so we kept him out. He’ll be alright, though.”
That’s the message the Chiefs want out there right now. The team is treating it more like maintenance than alarm, and Reid’s comment pointed in that direction. CBS still had Jones listed as questionable for Week 1 against Denver, so the issue isn’t fully off the board yet.
Jones wasn’t the only player missing. Left tackle Josh Simmons also sat out with a back problem that has been hanging around since mid-August, while Kingsley Suamataia left early because of illness. The result was a thinner-looking practice than Kansas City wanted coming out of cutdown day.
Reid has a habit of cooling these moments off, and the club usually follows his lead. With more than a week and a half left before kickoff, the Chiefs clearly have time to let Jones settle down if this is just tightness. They’d rather take the cautious route now than force him through a full practice when there’s no reason to do it.
Still, the next couple of sessions matter. Every missed snap will keep the Week 1 chatter alive, and Denver is not a matchup Kansas City wants to greet with uncertainty inside. Bo Nix and the Broncos’ front will test any weak spot they can find.
For now, the official word is simple: Jones rested, Reid said he’ll be fine, and the Chiefs are hoping the scare stays that way.
