Chiefs Stun Fans With Low Free Agency Grade After Kenneth Walker Signing

Despite adding Kenneth Walker III to bolster their offense, the Kansas City Chiefs face scrutiny for their offseason moves, especially on defense, receiving a D+ free agency grade that raises eyebrows.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a whirlwind offseason, making waves in both free agency and the trade market. One of their headline moves involved sending cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, a trade that netted them a first-round pick this year along with additional draft assets. The Rams wasted no time, rewarding McDuffie with a lucrative contract.

While the McDuffie trade was anticipated and doesn't spell disaster for the Chiefs, the team faced a significant exodus at the onset of free agency. Defensive stalwarts Jaylen Watson, Bryan Cook, and Leo Chenal departed, and on the offensive side, running back Isiah Pacheco also moved on.

However, it's not all gloom in Kansas City. The return of tight end Travis Kelce is a beacon of stability, and the Chiefs made a splash by signing Seahawks running back and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to a hefty contract. This addition bolsters an already potent offense, but defensive concerns remain.

Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports didn't hold back, assigning the Chiefs a D+ grade for their offseason maneuvers so far. The loss of a significant portion of their secondary is particularly troubling, despite the acquisition of safety Alohi Gilman from the Ravens, who was initially with the Chargers.

To fortify their roster, the Chiefs also picked up Khyiris Tonga from the New England Patriots, a move that promises value. Meanwhile, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew's departure to the Arizona Cardinals shouldn't cause much stir as long as Patrick Mahomes remains at the helm, healthy and performing at his MVP level.

In a positive turn, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton has re-signed on a two-year deal after a strong comeback season, providing Mahomes with a reliable target.

As the draft approaches, initial projections had the Chiefs eyeing Notre Dame's RB Jeremiyah Love with their No. 9 pick, but Kenneth Walker's arrival shifts that narrative. Ohio State WR Carnell Tate was also in the mix, but the Chiefs might now prioritize reinforcing their secondary, potentially targeting a safety or cornerback with their top pick and possibly another with the Rams' late first-rounder.

All eyes will be on Kansas City as they navigate these strategic decisions, aiming to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
