The Chiefs are getting closer to some needed relief in the secondary, with safety Chamarri Conner on track to return to practice Wednesday and rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane trending in a good direction as Kansas City gets ready for Sunday’s matchup with the Dolphins.
Head coach Andy Reid said the team plans to bring Conner along carefully after the veteran defensive back missed the first two games of the season with a knee injury.
"As far as the guys that won't practice, Josh won't practice today," Reid said, according to A to Z Sports. "He is getting better, but he won't go today.
Chamarri's gonna do some stuff. We're gonna ease him back into the mix."
Conner has been out for nearly two months because of the knee issue and did not practice at all during the first two weeks of the regular season.
Delane’s status also looked more encouraging on Wednesday. When asked whether the rookie would be a full participant this week, Reid answered, "I think so," though he added that the Chiefs would continue to handle things on a day-to-day basis.
Delane was active for Sunday’s 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts, but he never got into the game. Afterward, Reid said Kansas City had treated him as an emergency option while giving his shoulder more time to heal.
The No. 6 overall pick flashed right away before the injury flared back up in Week 1, picking off Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on just his third NFL defensive snap.
Kansas City traded up to draft Delane sixth overall with the idea that he could help the secondary immediately. His man coverage ability made him a candidate to step in right away.
If Conner is cleared for game action, he would add another proven piece to the mix. The fourth-year defensive back has been in Kansas City since the Chiefs selected him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
For now, the Chiefs are opening the week with some good news in the secondary as they head into their first road game of the season against Miami.
