The Chiefs’ rookies are still drawing the brightest spotlight as training camp gets rolling, and two names keep popping up: Mansoor Delane and Kahlil Benson.
Delane, the top pick, is the bigger concern right now. He’s been in a yellow contact jersey as a precaution, according to Nate Taylor of ESPN, but he has still been on the field. That matters for Kansas City, because Delane is viewed as a key piece of the team’s revamped secondary.
"He wants to do everything, but we're not allowing him to use that [right] arm," Reid said of Delane. "He's out there playing kind of one-handed.
We're keeping an eye on him. It's great for him because he's got to work his feet and techniques.
It actually works to his benefit in the long run."
For now, the Chiefs are simply trying to manage his workload and watch how quickly he can get back to full speed. Given his draft status and role, his availability is one of the most important camp storylines to follow over the next few days.
Benson is in a different lane, but he’s turning heads too. He impressed enough in minicamp to earn work at right tackle, and that opportunity has carried into training camp. Now the Chiefs want to see what he looks like against their best pass rushers once the pads come on.
Reid pointed to George Karlaftis, Ashton Gillotte, R Mason Thomas and Felix Anudike-Uzomah as the kind of pressure Benson will have to handle in padded practice.
"Can you pound through those 2½-hour practices in the heat with the pads on?" Reid said.
"And then, you've got the preseason game. How do you handle that?
It's a long road, but we'll see how he does. But up to this point, my hat goes off to him."
That test matters beyond just Benson. It also adds another layer to the situation at right tackle, where Jaylon Moore has already been labeled a make or break player who needs a big year.
