Kansas City spent most of its offseason leaving the wide receiver room alone, and that choice left plenty of Chiefs fans uneasy. Brett Veach re-signed Tyquan Thornton in free agency, then used a fifth-round pick on Cyrus Allen out of Cincinnati. Beyond that, there wasn’t much movement, even with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy back as two of the three starters.
Now Allen is getting a wave of attention that goes beyond the usual rookie buzz. ESPN Chiefs beat reporter Nate Taylor recently joined That Football Show with Matt Verderame and delivered a strong endorsement of the fifth-rounder, while making clear he didn’t want to sound like he was reaching.
"Look, I've been doing this for nine years, guys... I don't want to be like, prisoner of the moment.
I don't want to be super knee-jerky... I have reason to believe that [the Chiefs'] best receiver is 13 (Allen's jersey number)," Taylor said.
"He's the one that I have the most confidence in growth starting Week 1... I know people are saying 'Well he didn't really do much in the preseason'.
I think that was very intentional and I don't think his quarterback was on the field and he's their best route runner... Either the second or the third day of training camp where I was like, 'Oh, so this is like, legitimate'."
That is a serious compliment for a Day 3 pick who hasn’t taken a regular-season snap yet. It also carries extra weight coming from someone who says he’s been around long enough to know better than to overreact.
If Taylor is right, the bar for Allen won’t just be edging out Worthy, Rice and Thornton. Kansas City needs a true difference-maker at receiver, the kind of player it has been missing since the Tyreek Hill trade in 2022. If Allen becomes that for Patrick Mahomes and the offense, the Chiefs could get back to the kind of explosive scoring they had earlier in Mahomes’ career.
And if that’s how this plays out, Allen would look like the steal of the 2026 NFL Draft.
